Kids Day at the Boston Triathlon Introduces Youth to MultiSport Events

All Greater Boston Youth Invited to Participate

BOSTON – June 21, 2018 – Boston’s only triathlon is inviting youth throughout Greater Boston to experience and combine a few of the different elements of a triathlon, including swimming and running. It’s all designed to encourage fitness and healthy activities while introducing youth to the sport of triathlon.

Kids Day at the Columbia Threadneedle Investments Boston Triathlon creates an opportunity that improves the lives of children by challenging them physically, mentally and socially by strengthening their minds and bodies through friendly competition. The event takes place July 21, 2018 at the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation’s (DCR) Carson Beach in South Boston.

“Kids Day at the Boston Triathlon offers young athletes an opportunity to try something new and different, in a fun, exciting and safe atmosphere,” said Michael O’Neil, president of the Boston Triathlon. “We are committed to helping ensure all aspiring young athletes have the opportunity to participate.”

Kids Day at the Boston Triathlon will feature activities dedicated solely to kids, including the USA Triathlon-sanctioned Kids Splash & Dash for athletes ages 7-15 and the Kids Fun Run for athletes under the age of 7.

Part of USA Triathlon’s Splash & Dash Youth Aquathlon Series, the annual Splash-and-Dash event is designed to introduce young athletes ages 7-15 to the sport of triathlon. Athletes will be placed in one of four age groups: ages 7-8, ages 9-10, ages 11-12, and ages 13-15.  The 7-8 and 9-10 age groups will swim 100 yards and run an untimed 1K. The 11-12 age group will swim 200 yards and run an untimed 2K. The 13-15 age group will swim 200 yards and run a timed 2K.

The swimming will take place at DCR Carson Beach in South Boston near the McCormack Bathhouse and will be in shallow water. The run will take place on the Harborwalk and the DCR Mother’s Rest Field.

State Senator Nick Collins will be the honorary Race Director for the 2018 Kids Day at the Boston Triathlon, which will bring together kids from across the city. From the start, State Senator Nick Collins encouraged the organizers of the Boston Triathlon to add an event focused on youth.

“From the beginning, Senator Collins was instrumental in helping to create Kids Day at the Boston Tri,” continued O’Neil. “He saw an opportunity to create a race that would engage youth and provide a positive pathway through sport. Thanks to his encouragement, more than 500 kids are expected to participate this year. “

Youth groups from across the city will once again have their kids participate in the events on July 21st, including the South Boston Leadership Initiative and Youth Enrichment Services (YES), nonprofit organizations based in Boston that provide the city’s Boston’s youth with year-round enrichment, fitness and leadership programs.

“The growth and success of Boston’s Triathlon has been nothing short of incredible,” said Senator Nick Collins. “Kid’s Day is an important component of the triathlon, as it provides an opportunity for our young people to strengthen their bodies and minds as well as their confidence. This day will no doubt be rewarding for all who attend and I look forward to seeing residents at the Triathlon,” concluded Senator Collins.

Now in its sixth year, the USA Triathlon Splash & Dash Youth Aquathlon Series is comprised of 50 events across the country. The focus of the events is participation, rather than competition and is geared towards introducing youth participants to the world of multisport.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the Columbia Threadneedle Investments Boston Triathlon will take place in South Boston on July 22, 2018. Athletes from across the world, the U.S. and Boston will compete in this unique and iconic event, which includes both Olympic and sprint distance races. The swim takes place at Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation’s (DCR) Carson Beach, a bike ride on DCR William Day Boulevard, and a beautiful run in South Boston.  Race and registration information is available at BostonTri.com.

The Columbia Threadneedle Investments Boston Triathlon is supported by Columbia Threadneedle Investments, Normatec, and Kicking Horse Coffee.
