Shoes Collected to Benefit Long Beach Rescue Mission

Long Beach, Calif. — Sept. 26, 2017 – Waste Management of Southern California and the JetBlue Long Beach Marathon & Half Marathon are inviting runners to help locals in need by donating gently used running shoes. As a sponsor of the event, Waste Management will be collecting shoes in Waste Management Bagster® bags during the marathon Expo and at the marathon finish line the weekend of October 6-8. All shoes collected will benefit the Long Beach Rescue Mission.

“As the recycling partner to the City of Long Beach we are thrilled to be sponsoring the marathon and to be holding this exciting shoe drive to help community members in need as we help keep the reuse cycle going,” said Sharon Shapiro-Fox, Regional Public Affairs Manager for Waste Management of Southern California. “By donating their gently used running shoes, marathoners will be doing good for others and for the environment.”

While training for a marathon, the average runner can go through three pairs of running shoes. Although running shoes tend to lose cushioning with intense use after a few months making them too worn out for marathon runners, they remain functional.

“Encouraging runners to donate their used training shoes pairs perfectly with our commitment to support our local communities,” said Bob Seagren, of Motiv Sports. “Through this drive, shoes that once got runners across the finish line can help community members get back on their feet.”

As a goal, Waste Management and the 2017 JetBlue Long Beach Marathon seek to collect 500 pairs of shoes through this drive. Runners may drop off shoes at:
