The 5th Annual Battleship 12K returns this Sunday to the USS Alabama to honor Veterans
November 14, 2019
Mobile, AL. – The Battleship 12K, a patriotic run to honor those who have served, is excited to welcome nearly 2000 runners to Alabama for the 5th Annual event.
The race starts on Old Spanish Trail in front of the Spanish Fort Town Center and takes runners and walkers down to US Hwy 98 where they have a straight shot across the bay 12 Kilometers (7.45 miles) finishing at Battleship Memorial Park next to the USS Alabama.
The race was founded by Michael Wattigny (pronounced Wat-ney) as a way to honor his father, Ret. Major Ron Wattigny who served 23 years in the US Army and was awarded a Purple Heart during his service in Vietnam. “The race holds a very special place in my heart. I wanted to create an extremely visible way to say thank you to my Dad and all the other men & women who have put their name on the dotted line. This race is that tribute” said Wattigny.
“Austal USA is proud to sponsor the Battleship 12K.” said Austal USA President, Craig Perciavalle, “We can’t think of a more appropriate event to support then one that gives back so much to our brave veterans. We wish all the runners the best of luck.”
Members of the military, both active and veteran, are given red race numbers to distinguish their service to our country and make it easy for fellow runners to thank them for their service. Each year the race honors a specific branch of the military, with the United States Marine Corps is being honored this year. Participants will find iconic symbolism at every aspect. The front of the shirt features the Iwo Jima Memorial, the rear of the shirt the well-known statues from the Vietnam Memorial, and even more on bibs, finisher medals, and the Challenge Coin presented to runners who completed the race in 2018.
Sponsors include Austal, Transportation & Logistics Society of Mobile. Community Partners include Team RWB, Mission 22, and the Boot Campaign.
The 5th annual Battleship 12K will take place on November 17, 2019 going from the Eastern Shore to the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park. The race is produced by FRESHJUNKIE Racing. To register and for more information: http://www.battleship12k.com
