PNC returns as presenting sponsor of the Handcycle Division and also will sponsor the Military Mile
PITTSBURGH, PA (April 4, 2019) – Returning race champions Kenneth Bestine and Ashli Molinero are ready to defend their titles at the 2019 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Handcycle Division presented by PNC Bank. Bestine, 52, from Clymer, NY, won the men’s race last year in 1:27:27. A member of the Paralyzed Veterans’ Racing team, he also won the division in 2011 and 2016. Pittsburgh-resident Molinero, 47, won the women’s race in 3:01:10. It was her fourth consecutive win.
“Handcycling is a passion of mine, and while I’ve competed in marathons such as New York, Boston, Los Angeles and Miami, none compare to Pittsburgh,” said Molinero. “We live in the most beautiful city and the energy around our marathon is amazing. Our course is one of the hardest for adapted athletes, but the support and encouragement from the crowds makes it pure fun!”
PNC Bank once again will serve as presenting sponsor of the Handcycle Division of the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon, one of only 35 handcycle-friendly marathons in the nation. This year’s field will feature a total of 25 athletes ― 20 men and five women. Competitors to watch include the returning race champions, eight members from the Paralyzed Veterans’ Racing Team and:
- Attila Domos of Pittsburgh, a two-time division winner who nearly broke the record for the longest distance handcycled in 24 hours in 2018.
- Daniel McCoy of Pittsburgh, a five-time member of the U.S. Men’s National Sled Hockey Team and 2014 Paralympic gold medalist.
- Holly Koester of Walton Hills, OH, a recent inductee into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame and the first person in a wheelchair to finish a marathon in all 50 states.
“Each year, we are humbled by the strength and determination of the veterans and competing athletes in the handcycling event,” said Louis R. Cestello, head of PNC Regional Markets and regional president of Pittsburgh. “They exemplify the spirit of sport and the best in all of us. We wish them well as they negotiate a challenging course and display the physical and mental intensity that distinguishes them among athletes.”
In addition to the Handcycle Division, PNC Bank sponsored the first-ever P3R Spotify Playlist this year and once again will sponsor the Military Mile located between miles nine and 10 on the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon course. Because PNC is committed to serving veterans in the community, the company looks forward to celebrating and recognizing all branches of military service along the race route each year.
The Handcycle Division will start at 6:50 a.m. Sunday, May 5, and follow the same 26.2-mile route marathoners run. It offers a scenic tour of Pittsburgh, crossing all three of Pittsburgh’s rivers, traveling through 14 neighborhoods and passing by several Pittsburgh landmarks ― including Heinz Field, PNC Park and the Cathedral of Learning ― before finishing Downtown.
