Joe Riis to speak at The Conservation Alliance Breakfast

May 17th, 2017

Wildlife photojournalist will present “MIGRATIONS: Photographing Wildlife Migrations, the Heartbeat of Yellowstone”

Bend, Ore., (May 17, 2017) – Wildlife photojournalist Joe Riis will be the featured speaker at The Conservation Alliance Breakfast at the upcoming Outdoor Retailer Summer Market. Riis’ multi-media presentation explores his decade-long project to document the animal migrations of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem using remote-sensor cameras. The breakfast, which is open to the public, is Thursday, July 27, 7:00-8:50 AM at The Marriott in Salt Lake City.

As the outdoor industry focuses more energy on preserving our public lands, Riis’ work shows us what is happening on those lands when people are not watching.

“I want people to think about the animal’s needs,” said Riis. “They need somewhere to live, the freedom to move as seasons change and as the climate changes.”

Riis is a wildlife biologist turned photojournalist and filmmaker. He is a National Geographic Society Fellow and Photography Fellow at the Wyoming Migration Initiative. His Fall 2017 photography book “Yellowstone Migrations” illustrates Joe’s decade-long project to document the animal migrations of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Riis was named National Geographic Adventurer of the Year in 2015 for his work in Yellowstone, and has photographed wildlife stories around the world for National Geographic magazine, ranging from the rare Gobi Bear to Tepui Toads.

“Our industry is engaged in an important conversation about public lands,” said John Sterling, executive director of The Conservation Alliance. “Joe’s work reminds us of why those lands are so important.”

In addition to Riis’ talk, The Conservation Alliance Breakfast will feature a review of the grants the organization made during its Winter 2017 funding cycle, and successes that grantees achieved so far in 2017. The Conservation Alliance Breakfast is open to the public.
