Connected Training App The Breakaway Raises $2.9M To Help Athletes Push Their Limits

February 3, 2022

Funding will drive the expansion of The Breakaway’s fitness platform and community

Truckee, CA /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – On the heels of completing Y Combinator’s 2021 Summer Batch, The Breakaway, has announced the closing of its seed funding round. The Breakaway uses the power data that riders generate on regular indoor or outdoor rides to create personalized assessments, workouts and challenges that help cyclists work on specific skills. Additionally, The Breakaway makes it easy for riders on digital platforms, including Peloton, Garmin and Zwift, to utilize the group challenge feature to improve their performance alongside friends and teammates. The Breakaway is available for download in the App Store for a monthly subscription of $3.99 that includes a free one-month trial.

This investment will power team building, growth and community development for The Breakaway in 2022 and beyond. “It’s early days, but we have gotten nothing but positive feedback from the community, the team we’ve built and the investors we brought on board. We’re mission focused and now have the resources to move quickly to help cyclists and eventually endurance athletes from multiple disciplines, all over the world,” said Jordan Kobert, co-founder and CEO, The Breakaway.

This initial funding round included participation from, among others, General Catalyst, Norwest Venture Partners and Zone 5 Ventures —some of the same investors who recently funded Zwift’s latest round of financing. “From our inclusion in Y Combinator’s Summer Batch, to kicking off our riding community and the closing of our seed funding round, 2021 was so much bigger than we could have dreamed of. With this funding and our momentum, we’ve brought on the founding team that’s excited to help people make sense of their data and find simple ways to see progress. Nothing gets us more excited than when we see people progress—it’s not only addictive for them, but also for us,” added Kobert.

The Breakaway was created by co-founders Jordan Kobert and Kyle Yugawa, who were part of the early team at fitness app Strava and helped that business achieve scale. Since inception, The Breakaway team has expanded with a core team of developers, notably including former Tour de France cyclist Christian Vande Velde and developer/sports scientist Robby Ketchell (Formerly of Team Sky/INEOS and Nike’s Breaking2 sub two-hour marathon effort).
