USA Triathlon Celebrates One-Year Mark Until London 2012 Olympic Games

July 27th, 2011

First qualifier for the U.S. team will be held in London on Aug. 6-7

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Today marks exactly one year until the start of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, and USA Triathlon and its athletes are diligently preparing for the sport’s fourth inclusion in the Olympics.

To celebrate the one-year mark to the 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremonies, USA Triathlon has launched a special web page to look ahead to the London Games. Visit for athlete profiles, a look at the Olympic triathlon course, feature stories, video from Susan Williams’ 2004 medal-winning performance and much more.

The first qualifier for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Triathlon Team will be held Aug. 6-7 on the 2012 Olympic course in London’s Hyde Park. Nine Americans will chase a top-nine finish, which can secure one of the first spots on the 2012 squad.

Laura Bennett (Boulder, Colo.), Sarah Groff (Hanover, N.H.), Sarah Haskins (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Gwen Jorgensen (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Jillian Petersen (Colorado Springs, Colo.) will compete in the Saturday, Aug. 6 women’s race.

Matt Chrabot (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Manuel Huerta (Miami, Fla.), Hunter Kemper (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Jarrod Shoemaker (Maynard, Mass.) will represent the men Sunday, Aug. 7.

The 2012 women’s Olympic triathlon will be held Aug. 4, followed by the men Aug. 7. Both events will feature 55 of the world’s top triathletes. Visit for more on the Games.

Triathlon is anticipated to be one of the most exciting events of the Games, and also one of the most accessible with Londoners being able to watch the event for free.

With such an exciting event just one year out, the top American athletes are aiming for a breakout performance in London. The U.S. is the only nation to qualify the maximum number of competitors — three men and three women — in each Olympic triathlon. Williams captured the 2004 bronze, and Team USA will look to add to that total next year.
