GFNY Global Cycling Marathon Series now celebrates two events in Uruguay with the launch of GFNY Uruguay Colonia scheduled for October 11, 2020.

NEW YORK CITY, February 12, 2020 – Colonia will host Uruguay’s second GFNY event. Punta del Este hosts the early season GFNY South American Championship on March 15. Colonia del Sacramento will host the inaugural late season race on October 11, 2020.

Declared ‘Historical and Cultural Heritage of Humanity’ by UNESCO in 1995, Colonia del Sacramento is just 50km away from Buenos Aires. This vintage jewel of a city is a peaceful retreat to all.

GFNY Colonia offers two distances. The 160km long competitive distance has 1011 meters of climbing. The non-competitive 90km medium distance has 650 meters of ascent. The topography of the area lends itself to a rolling course without any severe climbs, but it will be the winds coming off the Uruguayan coastline that could play a key component to the outcome on race day. Both distances share the first 40km across coastal villages, agricultural countryside and vineyards.

The top 10% of finishers in each age group qualify for the Racer Corral at every GFNY World event, including the Qualifier Corral start at the GFNY World Championship in NYC on May 16, 2021.

Colonia del Sacramento is Uruguay’s first European settlement, and the country’s first city, first founded by the Portuguese in 1680. The preservation and restoration of its historic district is dominated by a fusion of Spanish and Portuguese colonial style. Tourists can wander crooked cobblestone streets filled with charming cafes, beer gardens, restaurants, boutiques and craft shops.

“The inaugural GFNY Colonia is a celebration of everything wonderful about Uruguay’s vibrant culture and history,” said Lidia Fluhme, GFNY’s co-founder. “This is an exciting time for cycling in Uruguay. We are very proud to play a role in the continued development of the sport in a city we believe will be the prefect race-destination for people seeking new experiences.”
