IRONMAN confirms police investigation into Hamburg bike course sabotage
June 9, 2026
Hamburg Police are investigating a deliberate sabotage incident at Ironman Hamburg after unknown individuals scattered metal shards on the bike course in the Kirchwerder area. The millimeter-sized metal fragments caused hundreds of tire punctures, forcing anywhere from 50 to 150 triathletes to stop their rides or abandon the race entirely. Three athletes sustained minor injuries, with at least one requiring hospital transport after a fall that may have been caused by the punctures.
The state security division of the state criminal investigation office is now investigating the case, including charges of attempted dangerous bodily injury and multiple cases of property damage. While police initially called sabotage claims “speculation,” the scale of the incident—combined with similar reports from last year’s event and local residents’ expressed dissatisfaction with race restrictions—has led authorities to seriously consider it a targeted attack on the competition. Some local media reported the metal pieces appeared to be “maliciously scattered by residents” upset about the event.
IRONMAN officials stated they are “deeply concerned” that unknown individuals deliberately attempted to sabotage the eastern portion of the bike course with the apparent intention of causing punctures and disrupting the race. The organization is supporting the police investigation and plans to work with the city to develop measures preventing similar incidents in the future. Despite the chaos, German athlete Sascha Vetter won the race and earned qualification for the Ironman in Hawaii. Tri247
