Second largest Ultra-Trail event in the world joins race portfolio of largest global endurance brand

TAMPA, Fla. (May 14, 2018) – IRONMAN, a Wanda Sports Holdings Company, has announced the acquisition of AROC Sport and Ultra-Trail Australia™, the most prestigious multi-distance trail-running event in Australia.

Located in the Blue Mountains National Park, a World Heritage List destination, Ultra-Trail Australia has captivated runners locally and internationally, and has quickly grown to become one of the most talked about endurance events in Australia — attracting more than 6,000 competitors each year.

“IRONMAN will provide increased support and expertise to Ultra-Trail Australia and ensure that the event maintains its world-class standard and popularity,” said Tom Landon-Smith, founder of Ultra-Trail Australia. “The marketing capability of IRONMAN will also help to ensure that the event will grow while still maintaining the values, culture and integrity that we are proud to have instilled. This is a great opportunity for the event, and we look forward to working with IRONMAN and the trail running community on the next steps in the evolution of Ultra-Trail Australia.”

Ultra-Trail Australia takes place over an adventure-filled four days and has various distances for competitors of all levels.

  • The Ultra-Trail Australia 100 is where it all started. With a course that includes stunning views, lots of stairs and an elevation gain of 4,400m, it’s what makes it Australia’s most challenging and beautiful 100km trail running event.
  • The Ultra-Trail Australia 50 has quickly stepped out of the shadow of the 100km event to become an iconic event in its own right. The 50km is a perfect race for runners taking on their first ultra-running event with a challenging course that follows the second half of the 100km route through the Kedumba Valley with 2,400m of elevation gain.
  • The Pace UTA22 is the perfect introduction for new runners wanting to try out trail running and be part of the vibe of the Ultra-Trail Australia party. The event starts at Queen Victoria Hospital and finishes at the atmospheric Scenic World and with 1,200m of elevation gain. This event provides runners the opportunity to get a taste of the ultra-distance courses.
  • The Injinji 1km-4-Kids is an inclusive and fun race that engages a family atmosphere and community connection. The race provides an opportunity for youth to get into the festival fun and experience trail running for themselves. This is where our runners of the future get to shine and, as a participatory race, each kid receives a medal.

“I would like to acknowledge the great work that Tom Landon-Smith, Alina McMaster, their team, partners, volunteers and the local community have done in building this outstanding event,” said Dave Beeche, Managing Director for IRONMAN Oceania. “Now the second largest Ultra-Trail running event in the world, an integral part of its success is the camaraderie of the competitors, family and friends. We are thrilled that both Tom and Alina will continue to be fully involved in organizing Ultra-Trail Australia for 2019, 2020 and beyond. We look forward to working with everyone who has been involved in developing the spirit that has made Ultra-Trail Australia so successful and build on the enormous legacy that has been established.”

Ultra-Trail Australia will be held between May 17-20, 2018. For more information please visit www.ultratrailaustralia.com.au/.

About Ultra-Trail Australia

The Ultra-Trail Australia™ began with a search throughout the country for the best place to build what is now Australia’s most challenging, stunning and prestigious 100km trail running event. The breathtaking trails located in the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains National Park of Australia was the obvious choice. Starting in 2008 as The North Face 100 and Marathon Pairs, the 50km was introduced in 2013. The year 2016 saw an expansion of the event and a name change to Ultra-Trail Australia with a substantial increase in the entrant numbers in the 100km and 50km and the introduction of the Pace UTA22, Scenic World UTA951 (Furber Stairs Time Trial) and Event Expo. Ultra-Trail Australia has captivated runners locally and internationally and has quickly grown to become one of the most talked about endurance events in Australian history.
