Tempe, Ariz. Sept. 9, 2019 — 1,000 triathletes will swim, bike and run in the Arizona heat on Sunday for the 14th annual Life Time Tri Tempe Triathlon, owned and produced by Life Time which is set to open its sixth athletic resort in the Phoenix metro later this year with the opening of Life Time Athletic Biltmore. The event begins with a swim off the south bank of Tempe Town Lake, just west of the Mill Avenue Bridge, is followed by a flat, urban looped bike course and ends with a run around the lake. Triathletes will compete amidst the picturesque backdrops of downtown Tempe and Arizona State University. All portions of the race will take place within Tempe Beach Park, making for a stress-free spectator viewing opportunity.
Scott “Hootie” Hutmacher, Senior Brand Manager for Life Time Tri at Life Time, says, “We’re elated to welcome all athletes, onlookers, sponsors and vendors to Tempe for this exciting event that celebrates endurance and personal achievement. We’re expecting a wonderful mix of participants that includes more than 130 first timers to seasoned triathletes who understand that the Life Time Tri Tempe is the perfect training tool for IRONMAN Arizona.”
Tempe will play host to triathletes traveling from 19 states as well as Mexico and Canada. Arizona residents hold a dominant presence at the event with more than 80 percent of participants hailing from The Grand Canyon State and 63 percent of triathletes residing in the greater Phoenix area. This year’s participant mix is approximately 60 percent male and 40 percent female, the youngest triathlete competing is 13 while the oldest is 79.
A finish festival, where triathletes will be able to refuel and rehydrate, will be open and available to the public from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, with a bustling assembly of vendors and Life Time Tempe sponsors. All monies spent at the Michelob ULTRA Beer Garden will benefit 2Gether We Live, which provides volunteers to serve as the arms and legs for individuals with disabilities or illnesses and wounded veterans who cannot actively compete in events by themselves.
New this year is the “Can You Catch Max?” challenge, where any SuperSprint participant who toes the line alongside Max Fennell, Life Time Tri ambassador and defender on the CBS hit Million Dollar Mile, and either beats his time or finishes within 60 seconds of his net finish time, will earn a $1,000 donation made to the charity of his or her choice courtesy of Life Time.
Options include individual or relay for teams of two or three. Awards are distributed to top female and male performers across three separate race distances:
