TBI Announces “Triathletes Choice” Best-of Event Finalists

Triathletes’ votes determine winners; revealed at 9th Annual TBI Conference Jan. 25-27

AUSTIN, TX– Jan. 3, 2019 – Triathlon Business International (TBI) today announced the finalist events that were voted by triathletes as the “Triathletes Choice” best events in each of four categories: large event; small event; scenic course; and best Time To Tri first-timer event. Triathletes Choice event winners will be announced at the 2019 Annual TBI Conference, January 25-27 in Tempe, AZ, and will share the spotlight with the Ron Smith and Steve Hed Award winners, plus the best triathlon published article and photograph, influential coach, impactful triathlon club, and event video.

Nominations were received from 1,493 triathletes, with each category receiving at least 800 nominations.  Events that received 30 or more nominations were placed on the final voting ballot within their respective categories. The voting link is https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2018TriathletesChoice. Voting closes at midnight (PST) on Friday, January 11th.

The “Triathletes Choice” award criteria encompasses events around the world that:

  1. challenge, inspire or bring out the best in participants;
  2. create an atmosphere of fun, excitement and energy;
  3. go beyond the “call of duty” when it comes to customer service, participant safety, great organization and information, reasonable fees, coaching/advice, race day assistance, great volunteers;
  4. raises money for charitable causes;
  5. showcases incredible and/or iconic scenery (best scenic course category) and/or
  6. presents a safe, secure and fun opportunity for first-time triathletes to enjoy the sport (best Time to Tri event).

Each triathlete will be limited to one vote per category, and can submit only one ballot.

Best Large Race (1,000+ registrants)

  1. Chicago Triathlon (Chicago, IL)
  2. Escape the Cape Triathlon (Cape May, NJ)
  3. IRONMAN 70.3 Lake Placid (Lake Placid, NY)
  4. New Jersey State Triathlon (West Windsor, NJ)
  5. Patriots Triathlon (Williamsburg, VA)
  6. Trifest for MS (Bentonville, AR)

Best Small Race (less than 1,000 registrants)

  1. Candyland Cool Sommer Mornings (Clermont, FL)
  2. Deuce’s Wild Endurance Fest (Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area, Show Low, AZ)
  3. Patriot Half Triathlon (E. Freetown, MA)
  4. Pumpkinman Triathlon (Berwick, ME)
  5. Summer Roundup (Joplin, MO)
  6. Tinsel Triathlon (Hemet, CA)
  7. Tri the Wildwoods (Wildwood, NJ)

The Small Event category had more nominations than ever before and honorable mention for nominations goes to: Hyannis Triathlon; Jamesport Sprint Tri; J.C.B. Missouri High School Triathlon; Leon’s Triathlon; Mighty Mujer El Paso; Rock Half; and Rum Pass in Bumpass. Many of these events were seen for the first time in the nomination process and their participants showed great support with 15 to 25 nominations for each event.

  5. Pumpkinman Triathlon (South Berwick, ME)
  6. SavageMan Triathlon (Deep Creek State Park, MD)
  7. Philadelphia Women’s Triathlon (Philadelphia, PA)

Best Time To Tri First-Timer Event

  1. Chicago Triathlon Super Sprint (downtown Chicago, IL)
  2. Iron Girl Pleasant Prairie (IL) – all-women
  3. C.B. Missouri High School Triathlon (Innsbrook, MO) – inaugural, high school students
  4. Mighty Mujer El Paso (TX) – all women
  5. Ohio State’s Ross Heart Hospital TriFit Challenge (Columbus, OH)
  6. Philadelphia Women’s Triathlon (Philadephia, PA) – inaugural, all women
  7. Pumpkinman Triathlon (South Berwick, ME)
  8. Rip Roar West Des Moines (Raccoon River Lake Beach & Greenwood park, IA) – kids only
  9. Title 9 Tri (Hopkinton, MA) – women only
  10. Whaling City Sprint Tri & Duathlon (New Bedford, MA)
