Skirt Sports is Considering Options for a Strategic Acquisition Partner

March 31, 2020

Boulder-based women’s apparel brand seeking new ownership to take the business’ pioneering brand and loyal community into the future.

Boulder, Colorado — Innovative women’s athletic brand, Skirt Sports, is seeking new ownership. The company was created by professional triathlete, Nicole DeBoom, who had a vision to create women’s athletic wear that merged fit, performance and femininity, a combination that did not exist in 2004. She created the first ever running skirt, tested it at the 2004 Ironman Wisconsin, and won the race. The first Skirt Sports products were sold shortly afterward at the Austin Marathon in February 2005.

Credited with launching a new category (running and fitness skirts), Skirt Sports quickly grew from a single style to a fully merchandised, multi-category brand selling into a variety of channels over the years. Today, Skirt Sports is an omnichannel brand focused on ecommerce, wholesale (key accounts), international distribution and the Amazon 3P platform.

After 15 years of building the business, Skirt Sports is ready for new ownership, a move that has been accelerated due to the COVID-19 economic impact that is already occurring. “With the uncertainties that surround the COVID-19 pandemic, our best chance for future success is to identify a synergistic partner that can utilize our strengths,” said DeBoom, “The ideal fit is a business that appreciates the powerful community we have created and wants to carry the brand forward.”

Widely considered among the most diverse and inclusive brands, with sizing from XS to 3X, a 1500+ woman ambassador program, and a successful marketing strategy focused on showcasing the women within its fold, Skirt Sports is a great fit for any brand committed to including all women in its community.

The company is working with Bell Lap Advisors as they consider options for moving the brand forward under new ownership. Russell Cree, Managing Partner at Bell Lap Advisors, states, “This business represents a unique opportunity to participate in the large and growing activewear market, with a heritage brand, with a cult-like following, and iconic signature product.”
