Liverpool, UK – 27 May, 2016 – The 2016 Rock ‘n’ Roll Liverpool Marathon & ½ Marathon returns this weekend with the marathon and half marathon on Sunday, a One Mile Fun Run in the afternoon and a 5K on Saturday. More than 16,000 runners are set to take over the streets of Liverpool over the weekend from 54 different countries. Live bands will be playing along the course to entertain and encourage runners as they make their way to the Finish Line Festival in front of Echo Arena with a headliner concert by Cast.
“We are so excited to put on another great event in one of the UK’s most iconic cities,” said Rob Griffiths, race director. “We’ve seen a lot of growth since our inaugural event in 2014: in just three years, the event has more than doubled in participation. Our international representation has increased, and now more than 53% of the runners are female. We are also receiving such amazing support from the local community.”
The marathon and half marathon will start and finish by the Albert Dock, one of the most visited attractions in the UK and a World Heritage Site. The races feature scenic views of Liverpool’s stunning docks, rich architecture, spectacular museums and historic commercial districts.
Returning for the second time this year, the 5K will be held on Saturday at Albert Dock. In its first year, the race was given the Running Award for the Best Fun Run in the UK. Runners who participate in the 5K and either the marathon or half marathon on Sunday will complete the Remix Challenge and earn a bonus third medal.
This year, race organizers have added a youth aspect to the already fun-filled event weekend. KiDS ROCK Liverpool is a new campaign aimed at getting kids and parents engaged in running, breaking down boundaries and promoting a life-long enjoyment of physical activity. In partnership with the Liverpool City Council, 300 free places will be donated by the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series for the One Mile Fun Run to the schools, so that they can participate in the excitement of race weekend in the city.
Event weekend kicks off with a Health & Fitness Expo at The ACC Liverpool on Friday 27th May from 13:00 – 20:00 and Saturday 28th May, 9:30 – 17:30. The expo features free samples and the latest in running gear, sports apparel, and health information. Participants can pick up their race packet and t-shirt at the expo which is also free and open to the public.
This year, 90’s rock band Cast will headline the Finish Festival Concert on Sunday, 29th May. Hailing from Liverpool and part of the Britpop movement, Cast is sure to rock the Finish Festival celebration for the runners and their achievements. The concert and festival are free and open to the public.
