Cunningham Seawall 10k celebrates 45th anniversary, returns to original Saturday race day; Second annual race weekend to take place October 23-25 with new Remix Challenge; 2014 event generated $6.9 million in economic impact and filled 5,702 hotel room nights
VANCOUVER, BC –April 6, 2015 – Rock ‘n’ Roll Oasis Vancouver Half Marathon benefiting the John Volken Foundation today announced the Cunningham Seawall 10k will move to Saturday, October 24 to offer participants two days of running over race weekend. Runners who partake in both days of running with earn the coveted spinning guitar pick Remix Challenge medal in addition to finisher medals for each race.
“We have a lot to celebrate this year—from the 45th anniversary to the new race day for the 10k,” said Frank Stebner, previous race director & current president of Lions Gate Road Runners, the founders and former organizers of the Cunningham Seawall 10k. “From 1971 to 1977 the race was actually held on the first Saturday in November, so it is great to see the 10k return to some of its original roots.”
The Cunningham Seawall 10k began in 1971 and was named after James “Jimmy” Cunningham, Scottish stonemason and craftsman of the Stanley Park seawall. The 10k course encompasses the famous Seawall loop around Stanley Park, which it has traditionally done for the last 45 years.
“Through our partnership with the Lions Gate Road Runners, we were thrilled to combine the oldest race in Vancouver with the newest last year,” said Alex Bennett, event director. “This year, the races will bring even more running to Vancouver. By adding the second day of running, we’re creating a true running festival weekend—whether you want to enjoy additional kilometers of Rock ‘n’ Roll or simply run a shorter distance on Saturday and return to cheer on Sunday’s participants.”
“Last year the event generated more than $6.9 million in economic impact and also filled nearly 6,000 hotel room nights over event weekend,” said Mayor Gregor Robertson. “We are very pleased with that turnout and know this year will be another successful race, especially with the new two-day running festival weekend.”
The half marathon also boasts spectacular waterfront views. Nearly half of the 21 km course runs along the English Bay and Coal Harbour. Other scenic attractions include the hip, cobblestone-laden Gastown, Canada’s largest Chinatown, the surrounding area of Olympic Park, where the 2010 Olympics took place, and Lumberman’s Arch in Stanley Park.
From the calculated start line amenities to the non-stop on-course enthusiasm provided by miles of entertainment and cheering spectators, every participant will feel like a winner on both days of running. The weekend concludes with a high-energy finish line festival and headliner concert performance in downtown Vancouver.
The John Volken Foundation, a non-profit organization that operates the John Volken Academy, a long-term residential drug and alcohol treatment center, returns as the official benefiting charity of the race. John Volken Foundation’s endurance training and fundraising program, Team Volken, will help participants rock the half-marathon or 10k all while raising awareness and funds for addiction recovery. Team Volken provides participants with a training plan, coaching, personalized fundraising website, VIP at the finish line, among other benefits in support of helping those struggling with addiction recovery.
The Rock ‘n’ Roll Oasis Vancouver Half Marathon & Cunningham Seawall 10k benefiting the John Volken Foundation will kick off race weekend with a two-day Health & Fitness Expo on Friday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24.
