Las Vegas, NV – March 25, 2016 – The 2015 Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon & 1/2 Marathon generated a total impact of more than $226 million for the local economy, according to an economic impact study conducted by San Diego State University. The figures include more than $89.7 million in non-gaming, direct visitor spending, which represents a 6.3% increase year-over-year.
The 46,000 entrants from all 50 states and 65 countries was the highest total in event history. The race, along with the American Association for Ophthalmology conference, helped take the weekend to a #8 ranking for Las Vegas Tourism, a significant jump from #34 in 2014.
The report also estimated that visiting runners filled over 108,000 hotel rooms and generated more than $11 million in local taxes and fees, an 8% increase from 2014. Over 63,000 total incremental visitors traveled to Las Vegas over marathon weekend, with 89.1% coming from outside the state of Nevada.
“The Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon & ½ Marathon is truly a one of a kind international event which showcases all that Las Vegas has to offer,” said Josh Furlow, President of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series. “The marathon has become a $200 million weekend in Las Vegas. On behalf of our partnership with Clark County, our partner hotels, Las Vegas Events and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, we thank all of our runners and their supporters for coming to run on the Las Vegas Strip at Night.”
The event returns November 10-13, 2016 as the only private event that exclusively shuts down Las Vegas Blvd. Race highlights include must-see Vegas sights such as the iconic ‘Welcome to Las Vegas’ sign, the Fountains of Bellagio, the Mirage volcano, and Fremont Street. For the third time, the running will start on Saturday with the night time 5K, followed by the marathon, half marathon and 10K on Sunday. Runners can choose to take on the “Remix Challenge” and earn a third medal by participating in both the 5K on Saturday and any of the three distances on Sunday. Over 4,500 participants completed the challenge in 2015.
For the first time ever, in 2015 Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas added an extra day to the Health & Fitness Expo allowing for three days pre-race activities. The expo will open again on Thursday afternoon and those wishing to avoid the crowds and lines are encouraged to spend an extra day in Las Vegas and kick-off their race weekend early. The Health & Fitness Expo features over 80 exhibitors offering free samples, showcasing the latest in running gear, sports apparel, and health information. The expo is free and open to the public Thursday, November 10- Saturday, November 12.
