Peter Johnsrud (St Louis, Mo.) and Kirsten Sass (Mckenzie Tenn.) Claim Victories at 2022 St. Jude IRONMAN 70.3 Memphis Triathlon

Over 1,100 athletes took on the journey throughout Memphis and Shelby County

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (October 1, 2022) – Memphis, Tennessee and Shelby Farms Park played host to the second edition of the 2022 St. Jude IRONMAN® 70.3® Memphis triathlon on Saturday, October 1. With some of triathlon’s best on hand, the event benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® saw the athletes attempt the 70.3-mile IRONMAN journey with a 1.2-mile swim in Hyde Lake, before taking on the 56-mile bike course throughout Fayette County and Shelby Farms Park and finishing with the 13.1-mile run around Hyde Lake and on the Chickasaw Trail.

In the men’s age-group race, Peter Johnsrud of St. Louis, Mo. competing in the M25-29 age group was the first to cross the line with an overall finishing time of 4:19:42. In the women’s age group race, Kirsten Sass of McKenzie, Tenn. racing in the F40-44 age group took top honors with an overall finishing time of 4:46:45.

The 2022 St. Jude IRONMAN 70.3 Memphis saw more than 1,100 athletes representing 16 countries and 47 states start the race.  Athletes kicked off their 70.3-mile journey with a 1.2-mile swim in Hyde Lake, lined by a paved walkway full of spectators. The swimmers exited the water at Hyde Lake Boat House before taking on the single loop 56-mile bike course through the rolling hills in Fayette County and Shelby Farms Park. The 13.1-mile run course took athletes through a two-loop course within Shelby Farms Park, around Hyde Lake and on the popular Chickasaw Trail. The event offered 30 age-group qualifying slots to the 2023 VinFast IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Lahti, Finland on August 26 & 27, 2023.

During Saturday’s St. Jude IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon, three fathers reunited in a demonstration of not only of physical strength but the power of a unique shared connection – having children treated for cancer at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
