Edmonton Marathon says course measured correctly — some runners say no

August 18, 2026

The Edmonton Marathon and Athletics Canada maintain that the race course was accurately measured and officially certified, despite runners’ GPS devices recording distances longer than a marathon. Officials said the route was verified by a World Athletics/AMS Grade A measurer and that GPS can overestimate distance because of signal drift, winding sections, construction, and lane changes. They emphasized that the official measurement follows the optimal racing line, so additional distance shown on GPS devices does not affect the validity of the results. Edmonton Journal
