Continued fundraising efforts to support local recovery through grant funding and service projects

TAMPA, Fla. – On the first anniversary of Hurricane Maria, the IRONMAN Foundation® announced today that they will return to Puerto Rico in 2019 for the IRONMAN® 70.3® Puerto Rico presented by Puerto Rico Tourism Co. for follow up relief efforts. The IRONMAN Foundation will continue raising grant funding to support ongoing recovery from Hurricane Maria and provide a hands-on rebuilding project for IRONMAN® athletes and volunteers in partnership with Buena Vibra Foundation.

“We are very grateful for the ongoing support and commitment the IRONMAN Foundation has shown in supporting our high impact community work,” said Emil Medina, President of Buena Vibra Foundation. “We will take this opportunity to invite athletes from all over the world to help us develop long-term sustainability practices in our beloved Puerto Rico.”

In 2018, the IRONMAN Foundation provided more than $120,000 in grant funding to five local nonprofits to support Hurricane Maria recovery efforts. During the large-scare service project, more than 100 athletes and volunteers participated in a rebuilding project the day after the IRONMAN 70.3 Puerto Rico race, helping to revitalize the homes and community of Barrio Ingenio. In 2019, the IRONMAN Foundation has announced three ways to support continued recovery efforts:

  • RACE – Register to race IRONMAN 70.3 Puerto Rico presented by Puerto Rico Tourism Co. on March 17, 2019 through the TEAM IMF Program and fundraise to support local recovery efforts. Race entry and service project participation are included. New for 2019, the TEAM IMF | MORE IMPACT program includes specially curated cultural opportunities in the San Juan area.
  • DONATE – Funds will support IRONMAN Foundation grant awards in Puerto Rico.
  • VOLUNTEER – Register to volunteer for the service project on Monday, March 18, 2019. Participation is open to volunteers of all skill levels ages 10 and up.

“We are very excited to partner again with the IRONMAN Foundation for such a great cause,” said Alejandro Vasquez, Race Organizer for IRONMAN 70.3 Puerto Rico. “We continue with our commitment to be part of Puerto Rico’s rebuilding process by providing our 9th consecutive IRONMAN 70.3 Puerto Rico as a platform for this common goal.”
