Luck Stone, XTERRA, the City of Richmond and the Friends of James River Park Promote Healthy Lifestyles & Environmental Stewardship
June 6, 2012 (Richmond, Va.) – As part of a three-year sponsorship that kicked off last year, Luck Stone will be presenting sponsor of the 14th annual XTERRA EAST Championship off-road triathlon and trail running races Saturday June 9 and Sunday June 10.
Luck Stone shares a common goal with XTERRA to empower others to achieve their personal best in an outdoor rugged terrain and to honor the environment. It takes leadership, tenacity and commitment to train for an XTERRA event. Bob Grauer, president of Luck Stone, said, “We are inspired by XTERRA’s athletes and outdoor enthusiasts. Their grit and determination to be the best in the world and to exceed their goals is something we admire and strive to emulate daily in our business.”
Luck Stone’s commitment to XTERRA, to the Richmond Community and to the Friends of James River Park remains stronger than ever. “We are thrilled to be partnering with XTERRA on the East Championship and to bring elite athletes to a City that encourages healthy outdoor activities and environmental stewardship.” Grauer noted.
“The City of Richmond is playing an active role in getting the community active and engaged in fitness and health awareness with the Healthy Richmond Campaign. With the XTERRA games returning this year, this will be a prime
opportunity for Richmond to promote our great trails and parks, engage our cycling community, and encourage residents to get healthy, and stay healthy,” said City of Richmond Mayor Dwight C. Jones.
In partnership with the Friends of James River Park, Luck Stone’s sponsorship will also bring focus on environmental stewardship and showcase one of the best urban park systems in the nation. Luck Stone continues to demonstrate its commitment to the Richmond Community, the environment by preserving open spaces, providing products for
public trails and parks and cleaning up trail way systems throughout the state of Va.
“Richmond has been a crew and racer favorite for more than a decade now, and the trails have gotten better every year” said Dave Nicholas, the managing director of the XTERRA World Tour. “We commend Luck Stone for their support of the James River Park System, it is truly a gem. Here you have a bike course that resembles a wild forested rollercoaster ride right in the middle of a major city.”
This will be the 14th year for XTERRA in Richmond. The River City is widely regarded as the sport’s finest urban adventure venue. Both the off-road triathlon and trail running events feature a unique combination of natural and man-made obstacles as well as the best metropolitan trail system in the country. The epic ride through the James River Parks System lures athletes from more than 30 states and pros from around the world to Richmond each year.
Events include the XTERRA Fugitive 10k trail run, the XTERRA Richmond halfmarathon trail run, free kids races, free clinics taught by pro athletes, the Paul Mitchell Cut-a-Thon to raise money for the Challenged Athletes Foundation, and two off-road triathlons, a half-distance XTERRA Sport race (perfect for newcomers) and the XTERRA East Championship.
The entire course is open to the public so there are literally thousands of places to watch from, but the best spot is Brown’s Island – site of the start, finish, and XTERRA Expo excitement. Luck Stone is setting up trainer bikes in front of big TV screens showing real Richmond XTERRA course footage, creating a Kids Zone area for little ones, letting spectators operate the Loader Simulator they train associates with so they can experience what it is like working in a quarry pit, and broadcasting an athlete-tracker for the pro race on Sunday (8am start) that will allow friends, family, and fans to follow their favorites on big screens during the race.
