CHANHASSEN, Minn., September 24, 2018 – Life Time, the nation’s only Healthy Way of Life brand, congratulates two biking legends, Ken Chlouber and Gary Crandall, for their achievements and impact in the endurance and mountain biking communities. Ken Chlouber, the founder of the Leadville Race Series, was inducted into the Mountain Biking Hall of Fame this past weekend, while Gary Crandall, founder of the Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival, has officially retired following 35 years of leading his iconic event.
“It’s an honor to have worked with and alongside both Ken and Gary,” says Life Time Events Senior Vice President Kimo Seymour. “Their impact on these events, the greater Mountain Biking community and the communities these events serve will continue for years to come.”
Ken Chlouber started the Leadville Race series during an economic downturn in Leadville, Colo. when the local Climax mine closed. The Leadville Trail 100 Run started in 1983 while the Leadville 100 Mountain Bike race was added 11 years later, changing the sport forever. Marrying biking with extreme distance and altitude, the Leadville Trail 100 MTB is a one hundred mile race across the Colorado Rockies, starting at 10,152 feet and climbing to 12,424 feet.
An economic impact study completed by the Colorado Mountain College found that the Leadville Race Series injected approximately $15 million annually into the local economy. Today, several thousand riders apply for the Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike lottery slots each year.
Gary Crandall, a previous inductee into the Mountain Biking Hall of Fame, raced in the off-road Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival in 1983 with 27 participants. Every September, thousands of fat tire bikers descend on northwestern Wisconsin to tackle off road bicycle tests of endurance and agility offered throughout the weekend.
The Chequamegon event set the tone for the Midwest mountain bike boom that happened in the 1980s and 1990s. As the festival director since 1984, Crandall has been continuously at the helm of one of the most popular events in the sport, while emphasizing sustainability and attracting more youth to mountain biking.
Congratulations to you both, Ken and Gary, you’ve earned it!
