Junior Carlsbad Celebrates 30 Years Running

YMCA of San Diego County named presenting sponsor of 30th Annual Kids Race on Saturday, April 6 in downtown Carlsbad

San Diego, Calif. (April 4, 2019) – In celebration of its 30th year promoting youth fitness throughout the San Diego region, the Junior Carlsbad presented by YMCA of San Diego County will take place this weekend on Saturday, April 6, 2019. A North County family tradition, featuring a variety of distances for kids twelve and under, Junior Carlsbad makes fitness fun. Every child receives a finisher’s medal, goodie bag, post-race snacks and official race t-shirt.

“2019 marks three decades of Junior Carlsbad and we are thrilled to partner with YMCA on this year’s event,” said Ashley Gibson, Race Official. “It’s such a fun day for the whole community, but what we love the most is getting kids outside with their friends for an experience they’ll remember. So many Carlsbad 5000 runners grew up racing Junior Carlsbad and it’s that special connection which makes event weekend such a great event for our community.”

The 2019 race will kick off a weekend of family fun, hosting a morning of kids’ races as a precursor to the Carlsbad 5000, the world’s fastest 5K for adults and elite athletes taking place on Sunday, April 7. Both days will feature post-race refreshments, awards, live entertainment and a Wellness Expo that will run throughout the two days of fitness and fun. The YMCA is also hosting the YMCA Camp Experience, an interactive area where kids can enjoy relay races, arts & crafts, an obstacle course and more. There will be awards for the top three finishers at the Junior Carlsbad (ages 5-12) and the YMCA of San Diego County is proud to be the presenting partner on race day.

“Partnering with Junior Carlsbad is a great way for us to help kids in our community get a healthy start,” said Baron Herdelin-Doherty, President & CEO of the YMCA of San Diego County. “At the YMCA we focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility –  and we know that when kids are exposed to healthy habits at an early age those habits can last a lifetime.”

Participants can also register the day of the race, starting at 8:00 am on Saturday, April 6. Junior Carlsbad races, which vary in length froma ¼ mile to 1-mile, start at 10-minute intervals throughout the morning. Kids are grouped based on age, and parents are invited to run with their children at no extra cost. Although start lines will vary because of differing course lengths, all races will finish at the corner of Roosevelt St. and Carlsbad Village Drive in the heart of Carlsbad Village. The same finish line will be crossed by the world’s fastest professional runners on Sunday.
