The IRONMAN Foundation to provide an additional $25,000 in charitable giveback to the greater Cambridge region

TAMPA, Fla. – The IRONMAN Foundation® will award the first ever Gerry Boyle Memorial Community Grant to the Pauline F. and W. David Robbins YMCA in memory of IRONMAN Maryland’s beloved race director. In addition, 100 youth bikes and helmets will be provided to local organizations, including Dorchester County Public Schools as part of the “Bike for a Kid” program in partnership with FLO Cycling. The IRONMAN Foundation will also distribute an additional $25,000 in charitable giveback to nonprofit initiatives and groups in the greater Cambridge region in conjunction with the 2019 IRONMAN Maryland triathlon taking place on Saturday, September 28th bringing the total giveback in the Cambridge region to more than $295,000.

Gerry Boyle was the IRONMAN 70.3® Eagleman and IRONMAN Maryland Race Director and played an integral part in bringing the latter triathlon event to fruition in 2014.  He passed away unexpectedly in March 2019 devastating the triathlon community. To honor Gerry’s legacy of “Service Through Sport and Commitment to Community,” the IRONMAN Foundation will award its Gerry Boyle Memorial Community Grant to the Pauline F. and W. David Robbins YMCA, for its work to nurture the potential of kids, improving health and well-being, as well as giving back and supporting the Dorchester County community.

“The Pauline F. and W. David Robbins Family YMCA is so grateful to be the first recipient of the Gerry Boyle Memorial Community Grant,” shared Melissa Denault, Pauline F. and W. David Robbins Family YMCA Branch Executive Director.  “Gerry left an incredible legacy in Dorchester County and the YMCA community.  He was a catalyst in the development of our YMCA and served as a chairman of the board and was active member. With this grant, the Robbins YMCA will continue to ensure every child in our community has a safe place to learn, grow, and thrive.”

“The IRONMAN Foundation is honored to support Gerry Boyle’s beloved community through grant support and the Bike for a Kid program in partnership with FLO Cycling,” said Sarah Hartmann, IRONMAN Foundation Executive Director. “Our mantra is ‘Service Through Sport, Commitment to Community,’ and Gerry truly epitomized our mission by defining himself through service to others. He found joy in making life better for his community, our athletes, our organization and the world.”

In addition to the grant funding, the IRONMAN Foundation, in partnership with FLO Cycling, will host a “Bike for a Kid” pop-up service project in the IRONMAN Village Wednesday, September 25th, through Friday, September 27th.  Athletes who participate in the 2019 IRONMAN Maryland, along with their families and friends, are invited to visit the IRONMAN Foundation booth to assemble a bike for local kids in need. A total of 100 bikes and helmets will be built and distributed to children through the Dorchester County Public Schools, Cambridge Police Department, and The Salvation Army.

The IRONMAN Foundation Community Fund provides community and volunteerism grant opportunities to nonprofit organizations where IRONMAN events are held. In 2019, the IRONMAN Foundation will distribute more than $1.8 million in grant funding to support the needs of IRONMAN race communities.
