41-year-old amateur Indonesian takes his maiden victory at GFNY Bali
NEW YORK CITY, February 8, 2018 – It was the first long distance race over 100km for local, Juwanto, who took an impressive win at the inaugural GFNY Bali on Sunday, February 4.
The competitive long route covered 142km and 2100m of climbing, including a 1350m ascent to the crater rim of the Batur Volcano. From the top of the volcano, riders had a picturesque 40km descent down through villages, paddy fields and rainforest to the bottom and a flat, scenic 20km coastal route to the finish line.
Used to racing short 20-30km distances, overall winner Juwanto stepped up to his first long distance race. Preparation included cycling a 3-hour work commute as part of training, and using the hilly terrain around Central Java province’s capital of Semarang as his training ground.
Overall and age group winners of the long distance qualified for the racer corral at the 2018 Campagnolo GFNY World Championship in NYC, this coming May 20, 2018.
“We are very proud to have hosted now the third GFNY race in Indonesia. GFNY Bali was a fantastic inaugural event with 1500 athletes taking part on Sunday,” said Axel Moeller, GFNY Bali co-organizer. “We chose Bali because the island is a fascinating venue for tourists from around the world and strong government and police support for a safe and enjoyable race for all riders. We are now looking forward to the next GFNY Indonesia – the GFNY Asian Championship at GFNY Indonesia on a stunning race course circumnavigating the Samosir island on Lake Toba in North Sumatra this coming September.”
In the men’s race, Juwanto (Indonesia) crossed the line five minutes ahead of Aryanto Nugroho (Indonesia) and Candra Dauna Utama (Indonesia) who battled to a tight sprint finish in 4:13:01 with Nugroho edging out Utama for second.
In the ladies race, Gia Amalia (Indonesia) impressed over the challenging course taking the win in a time of 5:17:53. Christina Liew (Singapore) came second in 5:26:47 and Stelle Chen He (Taipei) rounded out the podium in 5:30:08.
