Inaugural GFNY Argentina to take place this Sunday December 6, 2015

December 2, 2015

NEW YORK CITY, December 2, 2015 – The inaugural GFNY Argentina will be held on Sunday, December 6 in Argentina’s cycling hotbed, San Luis. It’s now summer in Argentina with perfect cycling conditions while the Northern hemisphere is reaching the middle of the dark and cold days. The two course options of 99mi / 158km and 59mi / 98km offer exceptional riding and racing for anyone.

San Luis was founded in 1594 and is located at the foot of the Sierras Centrales mountain chain and the Chorrillos River. The city keeps colonial style features with big residences and sunny plazas and combines those with modern style buildings and decor. The course will traverse historic towns as well as brand new ones that exist for less than 10 years. Lake Potrero provides a stunning backdrop to the start and finish area and the semi-permanent car racing track with its pristine paving in the host town of Potrero de los Funes will serve as the initial miles of the race. The stunning climb of Mirador de la Punta serves as the final climb and provides sweeping views of the surrounding towns and the mountain chain. The climb is a favorite of fans who cheer pro cyclists during the Tour de San Luis.

“GFNY has always been the role model for our granfondo here in San Luis,” says Delfina Frers, founder of GFNY Argentina. “Being part of GFNY allows us to showcase San Luis to cyclists from around the world. With great roads, peaceful drivers and a region that supports cycling, we are excited to host GFNY Argentina in San Luis. We will provide an experience that changes their outlook on cultures, training and racing.”

GFNY President Lidia Fluhme: “GFNY Argentina will be an incredible experience. Riders from across the globe, including US, Canada, Norway, Italy, Netherlands and nearly all Latin American countries are registered and ready to go. Organizer Delfina is a former race car driver and owns a women’s pro cycling team. The sport needs more women like her.”

GFNY Argentina’s two distance options: a 99mi / 158km long route with 6,076ft / 1,852m of climbing and a medium route of 59mi / 98km with 4,212ft / 1,284m of climbing. While only few are in the hunt for the overall win, the age groupers are trying to be among the top finishers of their category to qualify for a racer corral spot at the GFNY Championship in NYC on May 15, 2016.

Like at all GFNY World events, participants are individually chip timed start-to-finish and are ranked based on their total finish time overall and by age group. All finishers receive medals to commemorate their achievement.
