Humana 5K Tune Up Run Returns to Atlanta

August 22nd, 2017

Kathrine Switzer, the first woman to officially run the Boston Marathon confirmed to participate; Annual 5K to take place Saturday, Sept. 9 at Centennial Olympic Park

ATLANTA – Aug. 22, 2017 – Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series and Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) today announced the return of the Humana Atlanta 5K. The race will take place on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 8 a.m. at International Plaza. The 5K is open to the public with a $5 donation to the Atlanta Community Food Bank.

Humana is also partnering with women’s running pioneer, Kathrine Switzer, who will participate in the Atlanta race and cheer on runners to the finish. Fifty years ago, Switzer became the first woman to compete as an official registrant in the Boston Marathon – an event that positioned her as a champion in the pursuit of challenging gender stereotypes in society. Three months ago, Switzer famously ran the Boston Marathon again to celebrate 50 years of good health and women’s progress. Through her partnership with Humana, the 70-year-old continues to inspire seniors to achieve their best health and experience all life has to offer.

“Over the years, I’ve loved seeing how running has evolved as a sport,” said Switzer. “For me, it’s always had a strong social impact in my life, so it’s great to witness the way communities are using running as a way to come together and stay active now more than ever. This 5K is a great example of that philosophy, and I’m looking forward to celebrating those who have taken that step toward health and fun.”

“The Atlanta 5K is a great and affordable way to train for the fall running season,” said John Smith, Senior Vice President of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series. “In true Rock ‘n’ Roll fashion, this race will provide the same upbeat experience with live music along the course, medals and a finish line festival. We are thrilled to be a part of this event and provide another way for the entire community to get together and take on a new challenge.”

This fun 5K, which launched in 2015, is designed to encourage healthy, active lifestyles, and inspire runners and walkers of all abilities. Humana and the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series are encouraging communities to get moving and achieve their best health.

“The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series is a natural tie to so many of our core values as a company, and demonstrates that achieving your best health can be fun,” said Dr. Lily Pham, Humana Georgia Medical Director.  “We look forward to celebrating again this year with our Atlanta community and those who plan to put their health first and enjoy the journey at the same time.”

In addition to Atlanta, the Humana 5K Tune Up Run Series will take place this fall in two other select cities including:

  • Hollywood Beach, FL

Saturday, Nov. 4

  • Tampa, FL
    Sunday, Nov. 19
