Head of The Charles Announces Inaugural Boston Beach Sprints at DCR Carson Beach, July 25 – 27

June 19, 2025

BOSTON, MA (June 19, 2025) /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – The Head Of The Charles Regatta (HOCR) is heading to the beach with a thrilling new format of racing that will debut at the 2028 LA Olympic Games.

For the first time, HOCR will host Boston Beach Sprints, a coastal rowing event at DCR Carson Beach in South Boston, taking place July 25–27. This first-of-its-kind Beach Sprint event in New England introduces spectators and athletes to a high-energy Olympic format that combines beach running with coastal rowing in head-to-head sprints.

The weekend opens with a Beach Sprints Clinic on Friday, July 25, led by USRowing, followed by two days of racing featuring U.S. National Team athletes and emerging talent from across the country.

“With its speed and energy, Beach Sprints are unlike anything most fans have seen in rowing,” said Tori Stevens, Executive Director of the Head Of The Charles. “We’re excited to debut this new Olympic format in Boston, a city with deep rowing roots and the rare combination of access to both a river and an ocean.”

“With all of the work that’s been done to clean up Boston Harbor, it’s great to see the amount of activity taking place at our urban beaches,” said Sen. Nick Collins who serves as a member of the Metropolitan Beaches Commission. “Events like this that are free and open to all bring people to our beaches and allows our community to see top athletes compete in a unique race at Carson Beach in South Boston.”

“Recent reports confirmed what we all know—our beaches in South Boston are amongst the cleanest and highest quality public beaches in the country,” said State Representative David Biele, a Commissioner on the Metropolitan Beaches Commission. “Activating Carson Beach with an exciting and accessible event like Beach Sprints—which will make its debut at the next Summer Olympic Games—will be a great way to highlight our world class beaches with a world class event and programming that are free to residents.”

Boston Beach Sprints is made possible with support from Meet Boston, vineyard vines, Concept2 and Filippi, and in partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and Community Rowing, Inc. (CRI).

The event is free and open to the public, and easily accessible via public transportation. Registration for both the clinic and competition is now open at RegattaCentral.com.
