Ex-pro Lemus takes GFNY Panama

October 25, 2019

High humidity and sunshine provided riders an extra challenge of elements at GFNY Panama last Sunday October 20

NEW YORK CITY, Oct 25, 2019 – The second edition of GFNY Panama did not disappoint. The picturesque course allowed riders to experience the beauty of Panama’s coastal roads, mountains and tropical terrain on a day where high heat and sunshine added a little extra challenge.

GFNY Panama was a fast tempo from the gun start. For 36km, speeds averaged over 40km/h on the flat Pan-American Road. Mojamed Mendez attacked several times in the first kilometers and finally got away, extending his lead quickly. However, he was caught getting outside assistance which led to his disqualification by the race jury.

The new lead duo Luis Lemus (Mexico) and Carlos Pascual (Panama) worked together the entire race and maintained their lead through the hilly section. Lemus raced pro for several years, finishing the 2018 season with Israel Cycling Academy.

On return to La Pintada, the gap was increasing and on arrival at Churuquita they had created an unassailable 6-minute lead over the chase group.

The final mile was a head to head battle between Lemus and Pascual with the former snatching victory in the last 200 meters in 5:02:21. Third place went to Mauricio Moreno Restrepo in 5:11:15. It was Lemus’ second GFNY win after Cozumel 2015 and third podium after finishing 3rd at the GFNY World Championship NYC 2018.

Marcia Barrios was untouchable in the women’s race. Barrios took a commanding lead from the start to finish, taking the win in 5:36:56. Fifteen minutes back, Ana Victoria Gonzalez crossed the line in 5:52:45. Cecilia Abe rounded out the podium in a time of 6:04:01.

Next up on the GFNY World calendar is GFNY Argentina on November 3rd.
