Taking on the longest race of her life just 7 months post injury, Allen finished 2nd in the grueling mountain race.
Tustin, CA – COROS Wearables Inc., makers of innovative GPS watches bore witness to one of the great comeback stories in sports as it played out in Chamonix, France last week. COROS Athlete Hillary Allen, a remarkable trail and mountain running talent took on the longest and perhaps hardest race of her life and came away with a 2nd place finish at the UTMB TDS, a 145k race with over 9100 meters of vertical gain.
While her finishing place is certainly remarkable, the full story really begins back in the Summer of 2017 when she took a near career ending fall during a race in Norway. A 150-foot fall resulted in 12 broken bones, although luckily her legs were spared. Still it took 5 surgeries and several months of rehab before Hillary could run again, let alone compete on the trails. As things were starting to come together, a freak accident in February of this year resulted in a broken ankle.
Fast forward to this Spring after a few months of rehab, a few cycling races for cross training, and Allen was in the French Alps preparing for the 2019 TDS race at UTMB. With this year’s version extended to 145km, it would easily be the longest race of Hillary’s career presenting several unique challenges. “I was uncertain I could do it, especially given the fact that I broke my ankle in February…I spent 2 months in the Alps of France training for this race and gaining my confidence back,” said Allen.
It was clear that she had her confidence back, as she put herself in a lead pack of women and would break away with the eventual winner 100km into the race. She would stay neck and neck with the race leader until 10km to go, securing her 2nd place finish. When asked how she felt about her race Hillary commented, “I was super happy with my race, the new distance and most importantly for stepping up to the unknown challenge after the uncertainty of my ankle break.”
Hillary has had her fair share of bad luck in the past few years, but last week’s TDS clearly shows that she is one of the best mountain runners in the world. Her race was one of several great performances by COROS supported athletes at last week’s UTMB. COROS is proud to support Hillary Allen and looks forward to her continued success.
