Decorated Cyclists and Restaurateur Family Opens Bike Shop

Brooklyn NY — October 25, 2022 /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – Burrowes Brothers Bikes officially opened its doors in Brooklyn. The community bike shop located at 755 Flatbush Avenue is two blocks from Prospect Park and steps from major bike commuting routes on Ocean Avenue, Bedford Ave, and Flatbush Ave. The shop will serve as a congregating space for the larger Prospect Lefferts Gardens community.

Burrowes Brothers Bikes will offer workshops, bike fittings, one-on-one training, small group training, bike service and repair, and community events/training rides in association with the Prospect Park Alliance. The retail shop includes products from Trek, Bianchi, Orbea, PUBLIC Bikes, Shimano, and SRAM. Five flat screen TVs broadcast cycling and other key sporting events. The space includes a takeout pizza kitchen by Zurilee, offering hand-stretched pizzas baked fresh in a wood-fired oven, an espresso/coffee bar in the morning, and a beer/margarita bar in the evening. A large community table serves as the dedicated waiting area where clients can grab a beer and a slice.

Burrowes Brothers Bikes is owned by brothers Jermaine, Paul, and Johann. The brothers have been staples in the Brooklyn business community. They first owned and operated a 200-car parking lot that was so successful it provided the upstart capital to launch additional ventures. In 2009, the brothers opened Mangoseed, the first dine-in restaurant in Prospect Lefferts Gardens and Flatbush, which they built from the ground up. In 2015, they expanded their restaurant portfolio and opened Zurilee, a wood-fired pizza restaurant and bourbon bar. The neo-caribbean restaurants have a cult following with thousands of reviews. In addition to the family operated entities, Jermaine is also the founder of production company Whole Picture Films.

“My brothers and I are thrilled to officially open the doors to our first bike shop,” said Jermaine Burrowes. “Burrowes Brothers Bikes is a dream come true and will help us continue to achieve our larger mission of making cycling more accessible for all.”

Since 2004, the brothers have owned and raced for Team Burrowes Brothers Bikes (formerly WSU), a member of the United States Cycling Association (USCA). The team is one of the most diverse and decorated elite cycling teams in the Northeast. When the brothers founded the team they were self-taught, self-trained, and self-funded, using low-end equipment and handmade uniforms to compete in the predominantly white and wealthy sport. All three became decorated professional Cat 1 criterion cyclists. Jermaine remains one of the most decorated criterion racers in the Northeast winning over 150 races including being a 6-time champion of the Floyd Bennett Series. The brothers have focused on fostering equitable access to the sport by leveraging their resources and athletic prowess to train the next generation of professional cyclists with a team roster of 18 riders strong.

A community block party served as the official launch event. On Tuesday, October 25, 2022, Burrowes Brothers Bikes welcomed hundreds of riders and community members. The shop provided free food, beer sponsored by Keg & Lantern, liquor sponsored by Buffalo Trace, games, giveaways, and a live DJ. Images of the event can be viewed here.
