Boston’s Only Triathlon Featured a Day of Thrilling Races that included nearly 2,000 Competitors

BOSTON, MA /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – On a nice summer day, the Columbia Threadneedle Investments Boston Triathlon returned to the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation’s (DCR) Carson Beach in South Boston to celebrate its 15th anniversary.  Breno Melo of Framingham, MA captured the title of top male athlete in the Olympic Distance race, and Alice Alberts of Boston, MA triumphed as the top female athlete. In the Sprint Distance race, Stephen Mais of Boston secured the title of top male athlete in the race and Ava Bullock won as the top female athlete.

This year’s USA Triathlon-sanctioned event drew thousands of competitors including U.S. para-athletes and featured both an Olympic distance and a sprint distance race, along with the first-ever 2023 Boston Team Championship. The winner of the 2023 Boston Team Championship title was Full Throttle from New York City. The city’s skyline made a beautiful backdrop for the race that took place at DCR’s Carson Beach, DCR William Day Boulevard, and Moakley Park. An award ceremony and party followed in the Athlete Village so all participants could celebrate their accomplishments and toast competitors.

“The Columbia Threadneedle Investments Boston Triathlon was honored to host hundreds of kids on Saturday for Kids Day and drawing high-level athletes and beginners from around the world to participate in the adult race on Sunday,” said Michael O’Neil, president of the Boston Triathlon. “This is our 15th year hosting the triathlon and we are always honored to partner with the city of Boston and the state of Massachusetts, Columbia Threadneedle Investments, Amazon, and Boston Medical Center to host this event for the community.”

As in years past, the event’s official charity partner was Boston Medical Center (BMC). Team BMC athletes raised funds to support Boston Medical Center’s work in health equity and address social determinants of health. BMC is leading efforts to shift the healthcare landscape and break the chronic cycle of disease burdens dictated by race, ethnicity, ZIP code, and income. Thanks to resources provided by Team BMC fundraisers, the medical center can expand its safety-net services, community partnerships, and health equity programming, and serve as advocates and partners for all patients. These expanded services will yield better health outcomes, educational advancement, economic mobility, housing, and career opportunities, resulting in happier and healthier people, families, and communities.

“This event does an incredible job of bringing our community together — from race participants, dedicated volunteers, BMC fundraisers, and countless supportive spectators,” said Leslie Walstrom, global head of marketing at title sponsor Columbia Threadneedle Investments. “We are honored to play a role in celebrating the fifteenth anniversary of the Triathlon this year, and applaud all those involved in making this such a success.”

In addition to the sprint and Olympic distance events today, hundreds of athletes under the age of 15 competed on Saturday, August 26, 2023, for Kids Day at the Boston Triathlon. The day was free for all kids thanks to Amazon and USA Triathlon as it featured the Kids Splash-and-Dash event for athletes ages 7-15 and the Kids Fun Run for all athletes under the age of seven. Youth groups from across the city took part, including the YMCA of Greater Boston, South Boston Leadership Initiative, and Youth Enrichment Services (YES), a nonprofit organization based in Boston that provides Boston’s youth with year-round outdoor enrichment and leadership programs.
