Announcement Is the First of Ten Announcements for Tenth Anniversary
INDIANAPOLIS – Beyond Monumental has announced today that wave starts will be used for the first time at the CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon and Half Marathon in 2017. The move, inspired by participant feedback and necessitated by a growing event, is made to improve participant experience and safety in the early miles of the race. The 10th anniversary of the event will take place on Saturday, November 4 in downtown Indianapolis.
A wave start breaks up the start line for participants into five separate groups with five corresponding starts, using a corral system based on estimated paces. As in previous years, the event will be chip-timed so a participant’s race time does not begin until they cross the start line. The half marathon and marathon participants will continue to start together.
“As with any event our size, our continued growth has led to some congestion in the early miles of our event,” said Casey Collins, Interim Executive Director, “We had record breaking participant numbers in 2016, and are already on pace to surpass them in 2017. The wave start will allow for an easier start, faster times, and a better overall race experience for everyone involved. Reducing the density of runners also allows our medical personnel better access to observe and navigate the course.”
Registration for the CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon, Half Marathon, 5K and Kids Fun Run opened on January 1 with special “Monumental Resolution” prices to the first thousand to register in each event. This year, those spots sold out in record time. The marathon and half marathon both experienced sellouts and record finisher numbers in 2016.
This announcement marks the first of 10 in a series that Beyond Monumental will release in anticipation of their tenth anniversary event. Announcements will be made on the fourth of each month in the organizational newsletter.
