The return of GFNY to Argentina saw Municipalidad de Godoy Cruz teammates dominate the podium for a clean sweep
NEW YORK CITY, Nov 7, 2019 – The return of GFNY to Argentina last Sunday November 3rd saw a fast-paced race and heavy Argentinean dominance across both the overall men’s and women’s podiums.
A controlled start for 5km through the streets of San Juan created an electric atmosphere at GFNY Argentina. Upon reaching the outer city roads, the race was on with riders setting a fast pace and jostling for position coming from riders throughout the peloton.
10km in two riders from the Mendoza Elite team “Municipalidad de Godoy Cruz” got clear of the pack and led the front of the race while the rest of the team controlled the peloton. Up the first short steep climb, four more riders broke away: three from Municipalidad de Godoy Cruz plus Mexican ex-Pro and GFNY Panama winner Luis Lemus, the only non-Argentinean left in the mix at the head of the field.
At the end of lap one, the leading front duo had a 1-minute advantage over the group of four. The third group of six riders was a further 40 seconds back. With 20km to go, the four chasers caught back up to the lead duo.
With 15km Ivan Eduardo Escudero (Municipalidad de Godoy Cruz) took a stab at an attack and make a break. Shortly after, Jose David Talavera and Mauricio Paez, teammates of Escudero, used a rise in the road to an advantage for the duo to later bridge the gap to the leader. Lemus was left to work solo and finish fourth. Escudero snatched the win in 3:32:29, Talavera took second in 3:32:29 and Paez completed the sweep in 3:32:31.
In the women’s race, it was a similar show of teamwork and dominance by Argentina. Maribel Aguirre, took the title in 3:42:16, followed closely by Mariela Delgado in 3:42:17. Michaela Barroso rounded out the podium in 3:48:33.
