(Logan, UT – February 13, 2019) Altra is pleased to sign as the Presenting Sponsor of Destination Trail for 2019, featuring 10 unique trail races ranging from 10ks to 240-milers throughout Washington, California and Utah.
Destination Trail began in 2012 with just five events focused on 10ks to marathons. As the popularity of 100-mile races grew, race director and Altra Elite athlete Candice Burt decided to take her race series to a crazier level by offering 100k to 240 mile trail races. Her series is known for the famous Triple Crown of 200s, where participants run three 200+ mile races in only three months in four states. The Triple Crown features Bigfoot 200, Tahoe 200 and Moab 240—three courses that are either point-to-point or single loop designed to make each step a unique exploration through challenging and stunning terrain.
The concept of the Triple Crown first originated in 2015 as the Double 200s—Moab 240 wasn’t created yet—featuring Bigfoot 200 and Tahoe 200. The first year had 12 starters and six finishers. In 2017, the Triple Crown of 200s was formed with the addition of the Moab 240, and 24 people started with 14 finishers. By 2018, the Triple Crown grew to 35 starters with 24 finishers and Burt hopes to see both numbers continue to grow for 2019 and beyond.
In 2017, Altra’s Event and Athlete Manager Mike McKnight won the Triple Crown with a combined time of 205:04:18 for all three races. McKnight will compete in the 2019 Triple Crown of 200s, where he plans to reclaim his title and beat his previous time.
“We’re excited to welcome Altra Running to the Destination Trail Race family,” Burt said. “We feel Altra’s ground breaking foot shape design is perfect for athletes competing in the most grueling and challenging races, including our Triple Crown of 200 milers. The longer distance a racer runs, the more essential it is for their shoe to fit perfectly. Altra has consistently designed natural, foot shaped shoes for all types of terrain. Here at Destination Trail, we especially love Altra’s gaiter traps for easy addition of gaiters, the FootShape toe box that prevents blisters and a variety of cushioning options from minimal to maximum, all with Zero Drop.”
The 2019 series features the following races:
Aug 10-14 – Bigfoot 200 mile Endurance Run in Randle, WA
Sept 13-17 – Tahoe 200 Endurance Run in Homewood, CA
Sept 14 – Tahoe 100k in South Lake Tahoe, CA
Sept 15 – Tahoe 25k in Homewood, WA
Oct 11-15 – Moab 240 Endurance Run in Moab, UT
“We’ve been impressed watching Candice and her team grow this race series into an incredible multi-distance experience for runners,” said Altra co-founder Brian Beckstead. “Altra is thrilled to become the Presenting Sponsor of Destination Trail for the future.”
About Destination Trail
The mission of Destination Trail is to be a trail running event company committed to giving people opportunities to push their physical and mental limitations to achieve incredible feats of endurance. They believe appreciation of the outdoors through physical activity like trail running will help inspire preservation of our beautiful wild spaces. This appreciation of the outdoors coupled with action to protect it and maintain access to the outdoors is a solution they embrace.
While working at a running store, Altra founder Golden Harper was frustrated that modern running shoe technology caused poor running form and had not decreased running injuries. His passion to create a shoe that followed the science produced Altra’s FootShape™ toe box, Zero Drop™ platform and Fit4Her™ female-specific shoes. Since its founding in 2011, Harper and co-founder Brian Beckstead have grown Altra from one to 30 shoe styles, winning multiple Editor’s Choice awards and distribution in more than 60 countries.
