Dyneema® Launches Revolutionary New Woven Composite

July 15, 2025

HYPERLITE MOUNTAIN GEAR FIRST TO BRING IT TO MARKET

GREENVILLE, NC & BIDDEFORD, ME – July 2025 /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – Dyneema®, owned by Avient Corporation, an innovator of materials solutions, has once again pushed the boundaries of fabric engineering — this time by doubling the Dyneema® in its latest advanced composite material. Enter the new Dyneema® Woven Composites, which take performance to the next level by combining the unmatched strength of a Dyneema® composite core with a 100% Dyneema® abrasion-resistant woven face fabric. Longtime Dyneema® partner, Hyperlite Mountain Gear, is the first brand bringing this groundbreaking innovation to life.

Hyperlite Mountain Gear, known for redefining ultralight backpacking, will debut the new material in three updated versions of its most iconic backpacking packs – the Windrider, Southwest, and Junction – marking the first major product redesign of these best-selling packs in over 15 years.

Dyneema® Woven Composites feature a dual-layer composite structure that combines the strength, abrasion resistance, and durability of a fully woven Dyneema® face fabric combined with the dimensional stability, structural integrity, and lightweight waterproof properties of Dyneema® composite technology. The result is a fabric that is highly durable under significant load conditions and after prolonged use.

“Dyneema® Woven Composite is a major breakthrough in materials engineering,” said Chiharu Pidgeon, Global Business Manager, Fabrics & Composites, for Dyneema®, Avient. “By harnessing the full potential of Dyneema® fiber with precision-layered construction, we’ve created a fabric that doesn’t just resist wear – it redefines strength and stability in high-performance applications.”

She added: “We are honored to have Hyperlite Mountain Gear be the first partner to bring this next-generation material to market, setting a new benchmark for high-performance outdoor gear.”

The result is a fabric that sets a new standard for performance and comfort in the field. Engineered for the most demanding conditions, Dyneema® Woven Composite delivers up to 10x more abrasion resistance, 5x better tear resistance, and up to 34% weight savings compared to the existing Dyneema® high-performance fabric composite portfolio.

Dyneema® R&D specialists spent two years extensively testing the new fabric with their long-term collaborator, Hyperlite Mountain Gear. With the help of Hyperlite’s extensive experience and network of elite athletes and mountaineers, they tested various versions of prototype backpacks during months-long expeditions on the most extreme hiking trails from the Alaskan wilderness to the Grand Canyon to the summit of the Rockies and beyond. The consensus was clear: the world’s strongest fiber™ just got stronger.

“We think Dyneema® fabrics are the future of the outdoor industry,” said Mike St. Pierre, Founder and CEO of Hyperlite Mountain Gear. “This is the most significant evolution of our core packs since their debut over 15 years ago, and we’re honored to be the first brand to utilize the Dyneema® Woven Composite technology. With this evolution, we’re delivering next-level performance without compromising the existing benefits on which our community relies. The result is a more durable, comfortable, and capable pack for the backcountry.”

He concludes, “There are many possible innovations with these Dyneema® Woven Composites, and we look forward to continuing to work with Dyneema® on game-changing products for the outdoor consumer.”

The newly updated Hyperlite backpacks Windrider, Southwest, and Junction will be available in Hyperlite’s signature white and black colorways in 40L, 55L, and 70L volumes, and in small, medium, large, and tall torso sizes.

The backpack redesign also introduces a host of functional upgrades:

  • Enhanced carry comfort: Redesigned shoulder straps and a new back panel offer better fit, weight distribution, and long-haul support.
  • Improved access and storage: Deeper and more easily accessed external pockets, more secure ice axe loops, and an optional internal storage pocket.
  • Customizable compression: Removable straps and added daisy chains for modular packing.
  • Updated hydration system: Streamlined bladder loop and relocated hydroport.

The backpacks are the first products in the market with the game-changing Dyneema® technology.
