MIAMI, Fla. — They came from near and far this weekend; 1,750 triathletes representing 20 countries and 27 states flocked to Margaret Pace Park to swim, bike and run at the 15th annual Life Time Tri Escape to Miami Triathlon, owned and produced by Life Time.
The triathletes’ day began by being taxied out to uninhabited Escape Island in the middle of Biscayne Bay, where they waited in the dark to give it their all at sunrise. Island fire dancers and a massive video boat kept them entertained and eased nerves before they swam nearly a mile to shore. They later biked through Miami’s Wynwood Design District and ran eight challenging ascents over the MacArthur Causeway.
Local endurance sports enthusiasts proudly represented Miami at the event, with around 50 percent of registered participants hailing from the area. Individuals from Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and ten South American countries turned up to compete, signifying the event’s international attraction. The youngest triathlete competing was 14 while the oldest was 77.
Yunior Rosete, 35, of Miami, took first place in the Men’s International division with a time of 1:53:20. In the Men’s Sprint division, Nacho Hernando, 26, also of Miami, secured first place at 1:01:11
In the Women’s International division, Imke Oelerich, 30, of Burg Auf Fehmarn, Germany took first place, crossing the finish line at 2:15:53. Virginia Echavarria, 30, of Atlanta, placed first place in the Women’s Sprint Division with a time of 1:21:20
Triathletes had the choice between two race distances, with 60% percent opting for the International division.
