WHY Racing promotes upcoming Virtual race with Tiger King spoof

April 21, 2020

If you can't race, you might as well laugh!

Vancouver, WA Why Racing Events, the race event company that promoted a Naked Triathlon as part of an April Fool’s Joke, is at it again. This weekend they announced that the leading characters in the “Tiger King” would be involved in an epic showdown at their upcoming Virtual Spring Classic Duathlon, Half Marathon, 10K & 5K.

Sherri McMillan, race director, explains “We can’t be together with our athletes physically, but we still want them to stay focused on their goals, keep racing with us virtually and continue to have some fun. Our team has been coming up with unique ideas to keep our athletes training and staying committed to their health and fitness. In addition, we want to make them smile and laugh. Our world is going through so much right now. If we can make our athletes chuckle that’s the most important thing to us right now when we can’t race with them!”

Their public announcement was a spoof on the Netflix Documentary “The Tiger King”. It involved McMillan dressed as Carole Baskin informing all her “cool cats & kittens” that she would be racing in the virtual duathlon. It included an appearance from the Tiger King himself, Joe Exotic, which in fact was the Why Racing Bike manager Shawn Dodd and McMillan’s partner. There are many comical references to the series, that is trending heavily and has captured a cult-like following.

“It was actually one of our manager’s ideas and we just ran with it. We were cracking ourselves up during filming.” says McMillan. She continues “There are a lot of reasons to cry and be fearful right now with the uncertainty in our world and everything we are all experiencing. If we can still find the ability to laugh and find some joy through this, it’s good for us all, physically and mentally!”

It would be impossible to fully describe the video and all its references and actually do it justice. You probably wouldn’t understand it anyways unless you watched the series, but if you have, it’s definitely worth the watch and should bring you a few giggles.
