March 9, 2023

Former Collegiate National Champion Margell Abel joins the USA Cycling staff with the goal of growing collegiate cycling.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – USA Cycling is proud to introduce Margell Abel as its new Collegiate Director. In this role, Margell will elevate the collegiate cycling racing experience.

Margell has been an avid cyclist since the 1990s and has been a rider, racer, coach, and race organizer. Abel currently coaches the powerhouse junior program, Boulder Junior Cycling, and has previously been the Head Coach of the Women’s Cycling program at the University of Colorado Boulder, a top collegiate cycling program. Margell graduated with a Kinesiology & Psychology degree from CU Boulder, and competed for the cycling club, winning the 1996 Collegiate Cyclocross National Championships. She went on to get her Master’s in Physical Therapy at Mount Saint Mary’s University, also competing for the club cycling team. Off the bike, she has worked as a physical therapist for over 20 years specializing in wound care for the last 8 years.

“I am honored to be a part of the USA Cycling team and to help grow a program that has made such a positive impact on my life. I’m excited for all the growth opportunities in Collegiate cycling, and how we can continue to create a pathway and grow the sport of cycling,” said Margell.

As high school racing grows at a rapid pace, USA Cycling knew they had to make a larger investment into Collegiate Cycling. With the help of the Bentonville partnership, the national governing body was able to create the new role and department stationed at its new satellite office in Bentonville, Ark.

Margell is based in Boulder, Colorado with her two children, who are both avid cyclists, and will relocate to the new home of collegiate cycling in Bentonville in the future.
