RunSignup Addresses Pricing Display Changes to Comply with Fee Transparency Laws

June 6, 2024

(Moorestown, NJ) /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – RunSignup, the leading registration and technology provider for races in the U.S., is updating pricing displays for specific states to ensure customers can be compliant with new fee transparency laws. These laws, often colloquially referred to as “Taylor Swift” laws, make it illegal for businesses to advertise or list a price that does not include all required fees other than certain government taxes and shipping costs. California, the first state to pass such a law, will require compliance by July 1, 2024, while Minnesota’s law will be effective January 2, 2025.

RunSignup is leading the way to ensure customers can comply with fee transparency laws by revising the pricing display for all events in impacted states. RunSignup charges a variable processing fee (6% + $1 per transaction) that is lower per person (or per registration) when more people register together. Additionally, discounts can be applied to a race’s price after the initial selection, including team discounts, family pricing, donation discounts, and more. Because of this, RunSignup’s auto-display of pricing in California will be based on a maximum calculation, where fees display as “$38.10 or Less” instead of “$35 Registration Fee”. This change will be rolled out incrementally to all 100+ places where prices can be automatically displayed.

“As a company, it is one of our key responsibilities to enable our customers to meet all legal responsibilities,” said RunSignup Founder and CEO Bob Bickel. “It’s one of the reasons we prioritized calculating and remitting sales tax following the implementation of Marketplace Laws. With the new laws around pricing advertisement, we want customers in impacted states to know that we are doing what they can to ensure legal price postings on their event websites. We hope other vendors will also work quickly to support transparent pricing, since their event customers are liable for it.”

While RunSignup will be updating all prices that are automatically displayed, event directors are encouraged to read up on the laws in their states to ensure compliance in manual text communications as well.
