Gravel shoes: the next growth category in running?

May 6, 2026

In March, Salomon brought out the newest (fourth) edition of the AeroGlide, and has released it in two different versions–regular (road) and gravel (GRVL). With this update, Salomon, among other brands, is adding to one of the fastest growing segments in running. So what’s this gravel-running trend all about?

Gravel running shoes are emerging as a hybrid category blending cushioned road shoe midsoles with the grippy lugs of trail runners, ideal for mixed terrain like urban paths, gravel roads, and light trails.

Salomon leads this trend, positioning gravel shoes as a culture-driven niche for city dwellers exploring outdoor routes without specialized gear changes. The brand draws from its sportstyle roots to create versatile footwear that appeals to fashion-forward runners, influenced by gorpcore trends making outdoor shoes everyday wear.

By late 2025 and into 2026, multiple brands embraced gravel shoes at events like The Running Event, signaling a shift amid the running boom and saturated categories. These shoes prioritize durability, performance on less technical surfaces, and crossover appeal between road, trail, and lifestyle use. Canadian Running
