Cotopaxi Announces Bold Sustainability Goal
February 3, 2021
Brand’s Product Collection will be 100% Repurposed, Recycled or Responsible by 2022
(Salt Lake City, UT) Feb. 3, 2021 — B Corp and outdoor brand Cotopaxi announced today its goal that 100% of its product line be certified as using materials certified as either responsible, recycled, or repurposed by 2022. To date 90% of its products currently meet this criteria, and 94% of Cotopaxi products sold in 2020 included a majority of materials that were responsible, recycled, or repurposed.
While Cotopaxi’s core giving and mission remains centered on solving poverty, the brand is committed to addressing its contributions to climate change, which has become a leading cause of economic inequity. To achieve this goal, Cotopaxi has partnered with Climate Neutral, a nonprofit organization working to decrease global carbon emissions, to achieve carbon neutrality in 2021. Further, Cotopaxi has partnered with leading specialty outdoor retailer REI and Trove, an expert in circular consumer experience, to launch its resell channel and extend the life cycle of its products.
Cotopaxi’s current product line contains the following sustainability features and percentages:
- 80% of product families have one or more sustainability features (16 of 20 families)
- 90% of total products have one or more sustainability features (146 of 162 products)
- 94% of items sold in 2020 had one or more sustainability features
Beyond aiming to serve a growing consumer trend towards sustainable purchasing, Cotopaxi was founded to alleviate poverty and recognizes the critical role climate change and biodiversity collapse plays in contributing to poverty. To ensure that Cotopaxi mitigates its negative impact upon society and environment, the brand has partnered with Climate Neutral to reduce and offset 100% of its carbon footprint in 2021 as well as launch and scale resell and repairs programs.
Davis Smith, Cotopaxi’s CEO and co-founder said, “Cotopaxi has always strived to design in ways that reduce waste and contribute to sustainable development. We’re thrilled to certify as Climate Neutral and advance our commitment to environmental and social practices that improve the lives of all those who touch and contribute to our brand. ”
With Climate Neutral as the accountability and logistics partner for Cotopaxi’s bold goal for sustainable focused product collections, Cotopaxi is taking its impact and sustainability driven mission a step further, launching a trade-in and resale program with the assistance of retail partner, REI. The program and logistics will be powered by Trove, a closed loop consumer resale platform that allows Cotopaxi to offer trade-in options to customers, awarding them with a gift card to customers to use on cotopaxi.com. These partners allow Cotopaxi to extend the life cycle of its products by providing customers with an option to resell their items as opposed to disposing of them.
