USA Triathlon Announces Rescheduled 2020 Collegiate Club and High School, Duathlon National Championships

May 29, 2020

Races headed to Lake Havasu City in October

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — USA Triathlon today announced the dates and locations for its rescheduled 2020 Collegiate Club & High School National Championships and 2020 Duathlon National Championships, both of which were initially set for this spring but were postponed due to the COVID-pandemic. Both events are now scheduled for Oct. 16-17 in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, as part of the Havasu Triathlon co-hosted by race production companies Tucson Racing and 3 Disciplines (3D) Racing.

Collegiate Club & High School Nationals were originally scheduled to take place April 3-4 in Tempe, Arizona, while Duathlon Nationals were originally set for May 30-31 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

NOTE: The rescheduled USA Triathlon Collegiate Club, High School and Duathlon National Championships are contingent upon Lake Havasu City lifting its ban on large-scale events by the rescheduled race dates of Oct. 16-17.

“USA Triathlon is proud to bring the rescheduled Collegiate Club, High School and Duathlon National Championships to Lake Havasu City. We appreciate Jonathan Grinder of Tucson Racing, as well as Kenny Krell and Ann Marie Kern of 3D Racing, for their flexibility and enthusiasm in hosting this jam-packed championship program over one weekend,” said Brian D’Amico, Director of Events at USA Triathlon. “Athletes can look forward to a beautiful, yet challenging, course at the Lake Havasu venue, which has two decades of history hosting championship-level events.”

“The Tucson Racing and 3D Racing team looks forward to welcoming the nation’s top high school and collegiate triathletes and age-group duathletes to Lake Havasu City,” said Grinder, Owner of Tucson Racing and Co-Race Director of the Havasu Triathlon along with Kenny Krell and Ann Marie Kern. “We are proud to showcase the Havasu Triathlon for an epic multisport weekend, and to give the chance for athletes who were unable to race this spring to have a new opportunity to chase national titles.”

The Havasu Triathlon has a rich history of hosting national triathlon events. It was the site of the triathlon trials for the 1999 Pan American Games, as well as the 2004 and 2005 USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championships. In addition, the race — which is typically held in the spring but was postponed this year due to COVID-19 — has served as the Mountain Collegiate Triathlon Conference Championships for the last eight years.

The rescheduled Collegiate Club & High School National Championships will feature all of its traditional events, including the collegiate draft-legal sprint, non-drafting Olympic-distance and mixed relay races, as well as the non-drafting sprint race for high school athletes. All team and individual scoring will remain the same. This year will mark the last running of the High School National Championships, as it will be restructured to become part of USA Triathlon Youth & Junior Nationals moving forward.

All events typically held as part of Duathlon Nationals will also remain on the schedule, including the non-drafting sprint, non-drafting standard and draft-legal sprint-distance duathlon events. Additionally, race weekend will include an age-group open (non-championship) sprint triathlon.

Athletes who were previously registered for Collegiate Club Nationals, High School Nationals or Duathlon Nationals have a variety of deferral options, including transferring their registration to the 2020 rescheduled event in Lake Havasu, the 2021 Collegiate Club (pending eligibility) or Duathlon National Championships, or another USA Triathlon-owned event in 2021 or 2022 — including Collegiate Club Nationals (pending eligibility), Duathlon Nationals, Toyota Age Group Nationals (pending qualification) or the Legacy Triathlon.

In addition, if the October event is ultimately forced to cancel due to COVID-19, USA Triathlon will offer full or partial refunds based on the cancellation date. Registered athletes will receive an email from USA Triathlon with more details about deferral and refund policies.

Athletes not already registered for Collegiate Club, High School or Duathlon Nationals, but who wish to participate in one of the rescheduled events in Lake Havasu, may now register at the respective event pages (Collegiate Club & High School, Duathlon).

USA Triathlon continues to monitor the situation surrounding COVID-19, while following the guidance of local authorities, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), when making decisions regarding the status of USA Triathlon events and programs. Any further potential changes to USA Triathlon’s National Championships event calendar will be communicated immediately.
