TRITON World Series launches 2022 calendar

November 30, 2021

Registration now open for TRITON Portugal on 1st-3rd April

30th November 2021 – LONDON /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – TRITON World Series has today announced the launch of the 2022 calendar of long, middle and short-distance multisport races. The first event of the TRITON series, which was postponed due to the pandemic, will finally take place in Portimão, in the beautiful sun soaked Algarve region of south Portugal, on the first weekend of April.

The Algarve is one of the most accessible locations in Europe with low cost airlines  flying in and out of Faro airport, just 75 k from the race venue in Portimão and has over 300 days of sun per year making it one of the sunniest regions in Europe.

The race is set to take place in an area of spectacular natural beauty. The stunning resort of Alvor Beach is known for it’s great white sandy beach and spectacular sunsets and nearby picturesque Alvor fishing village dates back to the times of the Moors when it was an important port. Nature-lovers will appreciate the Alvor Estuary with its series of lagoons considered of international ecological importance given their role as a stopover point for migratory birds and the dunes of the nearby Três Irmãos Beach are also home to several species of birds, micro-mammals, reptiles and insects. To the eastern end of Três Irmãos Beach, deeply sculpted cliffs rise up out of the sands, with rocky outcrops extending into the sea and along the seafront are many delicate plants, including sand couch-grass, alfalfa and eye-catching sea daffodils. The Algarve race will feature the following three distances and the unique 3-day format will allow participants to “mix and match” the distances or do one, two or all three sports (swim, bike or run).

  • Short TRITON 1.5 km swim – 60 km bike – 12 km run
  • Middle TRITON 3.0 km swim – 90 km bike – 24 km run
  • Long TRITON 4.5 km swim – 120 km bike – 36 km run

The “mix & match” option means that more advanced single sport athletes can try the other sports in any distance, making it attractive and inclusive to swimmers, cyclists and runners who may be keen to try another sport.

Swims will take place just 5 km from Portimão. The bike course is draft legal so no TT bikes are allowed, and will start and finish with a lap inside of one of Europe’s best racing tracks, the Portimao Race track and will feature a climb to the Foia at almost 1.000 meters high with some challenging inclines. The run will start in Portimão and go over the spectacular “Arribas”(cliffs) and “passadiços de madeira” (wooden beach walkway) so it will make for a truly unique experience. All event courses are in a circuit format of one, two or three laps, depending on the distance chosen, making it extremely spectator and support friendly.

The race hotel, the magnificent Pestana Blue Alvor, will host the official race village including an expo, massage, athlete zone, permanent recovery zone and feature free swim, bike and run clinics and other surprises along with chill out zones, several swimming pools, tennis courts and other sports facilities, bars and music enabling the whole family to enjoy this fabulous family friendly resort.

Paulo Passos Leite, Founder of TRITON Portugal stated: “We are delighted to announce the long awaited TRITON Portugal in the spectacularly natural and beautiful Algarve region of Portugal. We look forward to welcoming TRITON competitors to the Pestana Blue Alvor and sharing the unique attributes of TRITON Portugal with athletes from all over the world in the 1st race of the TRITON world series”.

About TRITON:

TRITON World Series is a worldwide circuit of multi-sport races, each one spanning 3 days, where each day the athletes compete in a single sport – swim, bike and run. The swim takes place Friday, the bike Saturday, and the run Sunday. The 3 times are added together for the general classification. TRITON races always offer three distances – SHORT, MIDDLE and LONG and athletes have the option to “mix & match” the distances or do one, two or all three sports. Athletes choosing the mix & max option will register individually for each event. Only when an athlete chooses one of the full races-SHORT, MIDDLE or LONG- can they eventually qualify for the TRITON final event.

The TRITON concept is based on 3 major pillars – Numerology, the Mandala Medal and the Sisu mentality. TRITON distances are based on the scientist Nikola Tesla theory of the 3, 6 and 9 and distances vary from event to event depending on the location and conditions. TRITON events aim to give competitors a physical as well as spiritual experience and deliver an intangible value often missing from other events. The TRITON finisher medal is a Mandala Medal made of 3 separate medals, one from the swim, one from the bike and one from the run and represents a spiritual journey. The Sisu mentality is the mental capacity to overcome hardship and is the mental strength that you need to continue to pursue your goals when others would give up.
