Swim for Alligator Lighthouse Registrations Filling Up Quickly
March 12, 2021
This popular, buck-list open water swimming race caps registration at 490 swimmers.
St. Augustine Beach, Florida – Branded “1 of the 8 toughest challenges in the world,” by Tom Ward (Nov. 13, 2019, RedBull.com), the Swim for Alligator Lighthouse race is seeing a surge in registered swimmers.
The fourth stop on the Speedo SALT Series is slated for Saturday, September 11, 2021. The race offers openings to 150 solo entries, 50 2-person teams, 40 3-person teams, and 30 4-person teams. The race will be capped at 490 swimmers.
It all started when World Renowned Artist, Lighthouse Larry decided to swim, in his native town of Islamorada, to the Alligator Lighthouse and back, alone, and self-supported, his friends thought he was crazy. After completing the endeavor, he knew “every open water swimmer should experience this.” Larry then became the anchor to the Swim for Alligator Lighthouse race.
The Fighting Manatee Swim Club, the masters swim club of Islamorada, accepted the challenge to present a world class open water swim event in the Florida Keys. The Fighting Manatees presented the Inaugural Swim for Alligator Lighthouse in 2013 and it is here to stay.
Proceeds from the race benefit the Friends of the Pool in Islamorada, providing scholarships for high school students. They also support small investments towards the preservation of the Alligator Lighthouse. The Swim brings awareness to treasured Historic Lighthouses on Florida’s Coastal Waterways. Friends of the Pool is an all-volunteer 501c3 organization.
