Swim for Alligator Lighthouse a Huge Success

September 13, 2022

Another successful Swim for Alligator Lighthouse open water race is in the books with 450 swimmers completing the eight-mile challenge in the Florida Keys.

Saint Augustine Beach, Florida /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – Once again the island of Islamorada in the Florida Keys played host to the Annual Swim for Alligator Lighthouse on September 10, 2022, the fourth stop on the Speedo SALT Series. 450 athletes from thirty-six (36) States and three (3) countries took part in the world renown, bucket list open water swimming race. The event saw swimmers undertake an eight (8) mile, or roughly 12.9 kilometers, swim from the Amara Cay Resort four (4) miles out to the Alligator Lighthouse and back.

Salty Sports Society Brand Ambassador Connor Signorin, a former University of Florida swimmer now residing in St. Petersburg, FL, crossed the finish line as the first overall finisher with a time of 3:07:08. Local hero Corley Smith also took the victory as the first female finishing in 3:35:33.

It all started when World Renowned Artist, “Lighthouse Larry” decided to swim, in his native town of Islamorada, to the Alligator Lighthouse and back, alone, and self-supported. Following his adventure, he felt every open water swimmer should experience the feat. This became the anchor for the Swim for Alligator Lighthouse.

The Fighting Manatee Swim Club, the master’s swim club of Islamorada, accepted the challenge to present a world class open water swim event in the Florida Keys. The Fighting Manatees presented the Inaugural Swim for Alligator Lighthouse in 2013.

Proceeds from the swim benefit the efforts of an organization named Friends of the Pool in Islamorada. The organization works to create awareness about the importance of preserving the 149-year-old lighthouse. The event raises college scholarship funds for students in the Keys with a focus on competitive swimming. The Swim also brings awareness to treasured Historic Lighthouses on Florida’s Coastal Waterways. Friends of the Pool is an all-volunteer 501c3 non-profit organization.
