Supersapiens and Team Jumbo-Visma Extend Partnership

May 4, 2023

Team Jumbo-Visma serves as Supersapiens’ longest continuous collaboration; the two organizations have been working together since Supersapiens’ launch in 2020.

Atlanta – 04 May 2023 – ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – Supersapiens, the world’s first glucose management system for athletes, and Team Jumbo-Visma announced today an extension to their partnership. Team Jumbo-Visma serves as Supersapiens’ longest continuous collaboration; the two organizations have been working together since Supersapiens’ launch in 2020. The Dutch team has kicked off the 2023 season in formidable fashion with wins at Omloop Het Niewsblad, Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne and stages at the Santos Tour Down Under, Paris-Nice, and Tirreno-Adriatico.

“Supersapiens is thrilled to extend our relationship with Team Jumbo-Visma as we do our part to drive research and innovation around glucose data as it pertains to decisions regarding training and recovery,” said Supersapiens CEO and Founder Phil Southerland. “We value this partnership as it drives research and validation on the impact of glucose as a necessary metric to optimize performance. It is with tremendous pride for everyone at Supersapiens to be a part of a team winning three of the most iconic jerseys in cycling at Le Tour de France. We hope to be a part of many future success stories and collectively inspire more people to ride more often.”

Supersapiens, powered by Abbott’s Libre Sense Glucose Sport Biosensor, provides real-time visibility to minute-by-minute glucose data. This data can be viewed on Supersapiens app, the web based Supersapiens Data Dashboard, or their groundbreaking wearable device, the Supersapiens Energy Band, which is the first and only performance wearable that is capable of reading glucose data directly from the Libre Sense Glucose Sport Biosensor. Supersapiens integrates directly with Wahoo’s New ELEMNT ROAM and BOLT, no longer requiring a phone to serve as the bridge and also integrates with select Garmin devices, Nolio app, Apple Health, and more.

Supersapiens’ science team works in collaboration with Team Jumbo-Visma’s performance staff to investigate various aspects of continuous glucose monitoring in cyclists during training camps. Specifically, Supersapiens and Team Jumbo-Visma have studied how breakfasts with different caloric and macronutrient contents and timing can impact glucose levels during morning training sessions.

“Supersapiens provides valuable insights in the moment-to-moment variation in glucose concentrations. Real-time glucose data informs us about the metabolic demands and physiological responses to training and nutrition both on and off the bike,” said Team Jumbo-Visma’s Performance Nutritionist Martijn Redegeld. “A better understanding of the metabolic demands helps us make more informed decisions about the dose and timing of nutritional interventions. As a result, we are better able to predict and prevent hypoglycemic states and related fatigue in our athletes.”

Redegeld explained that Team Jumbo-Visma’s performance staff begins working with a select group of riders focused on a specific topic or time window they are looking to optimize.

“By taking a methodical and individual approach, this helps both the riders and coaches breakdown the large amount of data into understandable pieces, which allows us to translate this into potential practical changes in eating habits,” explained Redegeld. “Supersapians’ data and insights helps inform the coaches and nutritionists about the individual responses to all kinds of challenges within pro cycling. This information can potentially be used to optimize and personalize training and nutritional strategies.”

The Supersapiens system powered by Abbott’s Libre Sense Glucose Sport Biosensor is now available in Austria, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
