RunSignup | GiveSignup Releases July Numbers to Build an Understanding of the Impact of COVID-19
August 5, 2020
Moorestown, NJ – RunSignup|GiveSignup released their July numbers showing that their volume of registrations and transactions is down 27-30% compared to July 2019, but that donation volume is up 90% compared to the same month. The report is one in a series of reports released since March 2020 to evaluate and understand the impact of COVID-19 on the endurance and nonprofit industries.
While the July registrations and transactions represent a significant loss of revenue compared to last year, the numbers indicate that the situation could be worse – and that creativity and adaptability have kept much of the endurance community afloat. Of the July transaction volume, only about 25% of it came from “real” races, with the majority made up by virtual races and new virtual challenges. Along with the shift to virtual, the report revealed a few trends:
- A 42% drop in race renewals, indicating that many events are sitting out the year or creating a new concept rather than opening amidst the pandemic
- A 46% increase in new races, demonstrating that many of the virtual races and challenges that are finding success are starting from scratch rather than piggybacking on existing races
- New payment accounts (generally representing entirely new customers) increased marginally, with most new customers coming from the nonprofit world and looking for ways to raise money virtually
- Average event size is falling, with fewer mega-events in the virtual realm
In response to the demand for virtual technology, RunSignup |GiveSignup has continued to release software throughout the summer, building out a robust virtual results platform, building a new Challenge Platform, enabling RaceDay Certified Timers to offer RaceJoy Anywhere for virtual race tracking, and enhancing GiveSignup’s fundraising tools. Additionally, they are preparing for new challenges with in-person events, releasing a new Corral Management system to help race organizers setup wave and rolling starts.
Looking ahead, RunSignup | GiveSignup will continue to build technology for both virtual and “real” races and anticipates broad use of both sets of technology over time. To learn more, visit: https://runsignup.blog/2020/08/04/july-2020-runsignup-givesignup-numbers/.
