Rudy Von Berg (USA) And Kat Matthews (GBR) Claim Thrilling Victories at 2023 Memorial Herman IRONMAN the Americas Championship Texas Triathlon, Part of The Vinfast IRONMAN North America Series

- Over 2,000 athletes converged in southeastern Texas for the first full-distance IRONMAN triathlon of the year in North America

THE WOODLANDS, Texas (April 22, 2023) /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – The Woodlands, Texas welcomed the return of Memorial Herman IRONMAN The Americas Championship Texas triathlon, part of the VinFast IRONMAN North America Series to the Lone Star State on Saturday, April 22. In a thrilling sprint finish, Rudy von Berg (USA) made a last-minute surge to capture the overall victory with a time of 7:44:51. In the women’s race, Kat Matthews (GBR) claimed an inspiring victory in a triumphant return to full-distance IRONMAN racing following a long recovery from a training accident last fall finishing with a time of 8:32:52. The race featured live event coverage on the IRONMAN.com/LIVE, IRONMAN YouTube and Facebook channels, and was the first in a series of 12 IRONMAN triathlon events from across the globe broadcast throughout 2023 season. Only twelve seconds back in second place in the men’s race was Robert Wilkowiecki (POL) settling for second place after being passed by von Berg in the final stretch resulting in a finishing time of 7:45:04, while Matthew Marquardt (USA), who was making his debut performance as professional, claimed third position on the podium only 21 seconds behind Marquardt with a time of 7:45:12. In the professional women’s race, Maja Stage Nielsen (DEN) followed in second less than two minutes behind Matthews with a time of 8:34:51, while defending champion Jocelyn McCauley (USA) rounded out a gutsy performance to secure third place with a time of 8:40:30.

The 2023 Memorial Herman IRONMAN The Americas Championship Texas triathlon, part of the VinFast IRONMAN North America Series, saw more than 2,000 athletes from 57 countries and 49 states start the race. The event led racers along a 140.6-mile journey through The Woodlands with a spectacular finish on Waterway Ave. The competition began with a 2.4-mile point-to-point swim inside Lake Woodlands beginning at North Shore Park before they embarked on a 112-mile two-loop bike along Hardy Toll Road. The 26.2-mile marathon run allowed athletes to soak in one of the most spirited spectator-lined courses on the IRONMAN circuit, with athletes racing down Hippie Hollow—an area lined with tie-dye banners, twinkling lights, and costumed performers. The event offered 100 male and 100 female qualifying slots for the 2023 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship, with the men’s race taking place on September 10 in Nice, France and the women’s race taking place on October 14, 2023, in Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i.
