Renegade Running Celebrates BIPOC Athlete Team with First-Ever LA Marathon Retail Pop-Up

March 1, 2024

Latino-owned run specialty store partners with Latina Nike Elite Marathon Athlete, Nell Rojas to support 26 first-time marathoners at the LA Marathon; unveils product exclusives from Satisfy Running, Hermanos Koumori, Oakley and more

OAKLAND, Calif. (March 1, 2024)/ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – Renegade Running, a Latino-owned, specialty run store born and headquartered in Oakland, announces its first-ever pop-up location in Los Angeles. The retail experience celebrates the 26 BIPOC runners Renegade is sponsoring in the 2024 Los Angeles Marathon and will showcase Renegade’s distinctly unique apparel and shoe curation with product exclusives and custom LA Marathon gear from brand partners Nike, Oakley, Satisfy Running, Hermanos Koumori and Pas Normal. Additionally, interested community members will have access to free wellness activities led by local leaders and running groups

“Renegade Running was built on the dream of an inclusive running community,” said Renegade Running’s Founder Victor Diaz. “We are excited to bring our vision to one of the most diverse cities in the world; a place that resonates deeply with me, from the family-oriented culture to its unique energy. It will be a very special time of celebration as our first athlete team toes the line after months of training. While running is in our DNA, this team’s success is a manifestation of our goals – to sink deeper into connections, embrace community members of all backgrounds and abilities, and create impact beyond sport.”

Born in 2020, Renegade was founded by Victor Diaz, a former public educator raised in the activist and Chicano neighborhoods of San Jose, California. The shop, intentionally designed like an art exhibit, embodies the creative energy, sense of identity, and cultural pride Diaz discovered through running. Unlike most run specialty stores, Renegade’s apparel collection is inspired by the diversity of the Oakland community and features a handpicked curation of diverse designers worldwide. His thoughtful collections and offerings open a new channel, elevating global talent into the U.S. running market.

The LA Marathon will mark the completion of Renegade’s inaugural community-based racing program, Project Renegade, which was built to support BIPOC runners and challenge the industry model of only sponsoring competitive athletes. The shop teamed up with Nike to provide each runner with a custom training plan and coaching by Nell Rojas, Nike Athlete and Elite Marathoner, secure LA Marathon bibs, and outfit runners in Nike gear. The 26 California-based runners – one for each mile of the marathon – each uplift their communities in unique ways and range in racial and ethnic groups, gender identities, occupations, running experiences, and many other factors.

“I look to collaborate with brands that innovate the running space, aiming to empower all athletes in the pursuit of their dreams, whether it’s achieving their personal best or conquering their first mile,” said Rojas. “By partnering with Project Renegade and Nike, I had the opportunity to glean insights and inspiration from these runners, curating tailored training programs to diverse skill levels.”

During the first weeks of March, shoppers can visit the store to enjoy shake-out runs, yoga, mobility, and meditation sessions while also browsing both well-known running apparel brands and up-and-coming labels from around the world. The founders of Satisfy Running and Hermanos Koumori will attend the first and second weekends of the pop-up, respectively, to select merchandise and introduce visitors to their apparel. Key collaborative and exclusive collections in the store’s Los Angeles offerings include:

  • Satisfy Running’s new, exclusive Renegade pieces,
  • the Renegade Running x Hermanos Koumori LA Marathon capsule collection,
  • Pas Normal
  • Oakley
  • Mountain Martial Arts from Japan

The retail and community space will open its doors on Friday, March 1, 2024, and close the evening following the Los Angeles Marathon’s conclusion on Sunday, March 17, 2024. Hours of operation will be 11 am to 7 pm.
