January 25, 2023

Triathletes and donors Audra and Michael Mallow make the largest gift in the history of the USA Triathlon Foundation to support new Junior/U23 National Team.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – USA Triathlon and the USA Triathlon Foundation today announced the formation of the Mallow Junior/U23 National Team, a new men’s and women’s high performance developmental team named after USA Triathlon Foundation donors Audra and Michael Mallow (Pacific Palisades, Calif.).

With a donation of $550,000, this transformational gift provides USA Triathlon the resources to formally create and support the Mallow Junior/U23 National Team, an important development program for aspiring U.S. Olympians.

“Junior development programs are the foundation for most successful Olympic sports. We wanted to create a runway for young aspiring triathletes to achieve success in international competition, including at the Olympic games,” said the Mallows, who are both accomplished triathletes with multiple IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 finishes, as well as many shorter distance triathlons and multisport events.

“We are fortunate to have champions such as Audra and Michael in our community. This gift supports one of the core missions of the USA Triathlon Foundation, which is igniting the Olympic and Paralympic dreams of U.S. triathletes,” said Dr. Gabe Cagwin, President of the USA Triathlon Foundation and Chief Advancement Officer of USA Triathlon. “The Mallows have made a profound impact on our sport and community and are helping lay down the groundwork for triathletes to continue to thrive on the sport’s biggest stage.”

“As we often say, no one stands on the podium alone,” said Scott Schnitzspahn, USA Triathlon High Performance General Manager. “We are incredibly grateful for the support of the Mallows and the USA Triathlon Foundation to fund the Mallow Junior/U23 National Team. The benefits of having a development team for the best young athletes in the U.S. is enormous as they develop their skills and gain valuable experience in their transition to elite level draft-legal racing.”

The Mallow Junior/U23 National Team will include male and female U.S. junior and U23 athletes who will be supported with travel funding to race at Continental Cups and international World Triathlon events, state of the art racing and training equipment, stipends for personal coaching and access to training, tactical and technique camps.

The team will be led and supported by USA Triathlon High Performance staff at training camps and international competitions, where they will hone their craft against the best Junior and U23 athletes from around the world. The Mallow Junior/U23 National Team will be another team under the USA Triathlon’s Olympic and Paralympic High Performance Elite Development Program, which includes Project Podium, the Elite Paratriathlon Resident Team, Collegiate Recruitment Program and Talent Identification (TID) programs.

The Under-23 or U23 division is a bridge between Junior Elite, Collegiate and Elite competition. To compete in the U23 division, an athlete must be between the ages of 18 and 23 and hold a USA Triathlon Elite License. To learn more about the criteria for the team, click here.
